This is probably a pretty directed post, but if it interests anyone and helps you out, then it's worth it for me to post. I was interested in an entry level but highly capable metal detector and zeroed in on the Garrett Ace Apex which came out in the fall of 2020 as their newest in the Ace line of detectors. It's multi and single frequency capable (5, 10, 15 and/or 20KHz) so can be used in al sorts of soil types and directed toward finding specific types of metals or more generally for more metals with the multi frequency technology. Also has a beach mode and can be used in the surf, but the control unit is only weather proof, not waterproof. The detector head and lower shaft are waterproof. Pricing is pretty set on the models at $425 without headphones and $493 with wireless headphones, though this is currently a 15% sale price from their listed MSRP.

I was able to find a promo code for metaldetector.com to give a $20 discount in addition to some special promotional items to be included: a pinpointer and a padded storage and carrying bag (in addition to a couple other small items, a digging trowel and a belt pouch). The value of the padded bag and pinpointer are about $120 based on their website prices. This brings the total for everything down to $405 or $473 without or with headphones, respectively with no tax outside of MA. (headphones cost 68 with the package or can be bought later at $120 separately).

Here's how:

Add one of these to your cart:

1a) without headphones: https://www.metaldetector.com/gar...ctor-basic

1b) with headphones: https://www.metaldetector.com/gar...r-wireless

2: add this to your cart:

https://www.metaldetector.com/pin...day-Banner

3) Proceed to cart/checkout and add this promo code:

20JJA

Continue with checkout and you should see that all the bonus items were added automatically, except for the pinpointer which you added yourself in step 2. You should see a discount of about $78 in the summary when you check out for the pinpointer discount and the additional $20 off. Enjoy and happy hunting!

I almost bought the one at Costco for $100. Obviously this model is probably 3x/4x better. Have zero exeprience in this but contemplating on the hobby. Recommend taking the leap?

I went through a wormhole on YouTube watching people find stuff. I've always wanted to buy one but have always been on the fence about pulling the trigger.

Not knowing anything about the one at Costco, I'd say, yes. I looked at cheaper models and they all suffered one limitation or another for one purpose or another. I wanted something that was high quality, suitable for many types of usable (civil war relics, jewelry, coins, good). Basically I wanted an all purpose tool to let me try dofferent types of detecting in different places where I would actually have good luck for all the types of activities. I did a lot of reading and found this to be a very capable model with the most recent technologies, is well reviewed and suitable for taking to the beach, or a field or a stream, as long as you're carful not to get the control unit wet. Without spending close to $700 dollars, fully waterproof was just not in the cards. This will let me get my feet wet, to make a water pun, without breaking the bank to see if I really like it, and if I really like one specific kind of detecting. I thought I'd be discouraged by a cheap one that is limited in more ways and would end up not investing the time in doing it. Good luck! Let me know if you decide to go for it!

Yes, those kinds of videos are cool. Lots of civil war history around where I live so I am cautiously optimistic about finding some cool war time relics!

This same deal works for the Nokta Makro Simplex package. That detector is waterproof (IP68) so it can play in the water as long as you aren't more than 10+ feet deep. Not multi-frequency though like the Apex. I have a Simplex as a backup machine to my Equinox, mostly so if I bring someone along who doesn't have equipment they can detect in the wet with me. Not a bad machine for the money if you want to detect in the water.

Thanks, Earnie. I considered that model, too, but figured water-based detecting (especially saltwater) might best benefit from ground balance in addition to the multi frequency ability (or the ability to use a specific frequency depending on the water conditions and what you're trying to find). I don't doubt it is good, and I'm glad the deal works on the Makro as well. I considered the equinox 600/800 but couldn't justify to myself the extra cash just breaking in to the hobby. Maybe I'll regret it later 😜
