The $99.99 price on this drive seems to pop up every few weeks at Best Buy for a short time. Earlier in Jan for example and again back in December. Drive was $89.99 on this past Black Friday. And was $87.99 in December through Best Buy's eBay site.

Some will see it as a meh deal at roughly $20 per TB.

My WD Elements (about 3 years old) isn't being recognized by my mac anymore.... is there anything I can do to fix it or put the "hd" in an ew enclosure?
Generally one discusses deals in these deal threads, not troubleshooting problems on older different hard drives. As with anything, One needs to do troubleshooting to figure out what may be wrong with the hard drive. Replace the USB cable for starters. Have a number of USB cables go bad on these portable hard drives over the years. Connect the hard drive to another computer. Check the hard drive's SMART data. And so on.

Otherwise I guess I'll just get this but I don't really want to support WD after this. It's a really small one I think 2TB big.
The 2TB WD Easystore is likewise on sale for $60.99 if you want a smaller drive.

If you don't want to support WD, then don't. Several other drive manufacturers out there to choose from.

$10 more for the 5tb "My Passport" version
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-m...Id=6380848

There's also an "ultra" My Passport model ($129 at WD Store), fwiw

But perhaps the best one is the 5tb "for Mac" model, supports USB 3.2 and $10 cheaper at $119

You would just need to reformat it for PC or use HFS+ driver for Windows.

Seems the differences are which cables/adapters are included in the box. The PC version has only usb 3.2 cable (no usb-c support but guessing you could use an adapter).

This is why I keep saying the "elements" line from WD is crap. All my elements drive have died but the other lines like "Easystore" or "mybook" are still up and running.

If this is a "meh deal," what is the sweet spot on $/TB for portable hard drives?

You would just need to reformat it for PC.
Also worth noting that the My Passport has a 3yr manufacturer warranty vs the 2yr with the Easystore.

EDIT:
I'd also be weary of WD's description of "USB 3.2" for their Mac model since they don't specify gen1, gen2, or gen2x2. Their "Ultra for Mac [westerndigital.com]" model, which is $30 more, only supports USB 3.1 gen1 so I'd doubt their "non-Ultra" version supports faster speeds for $30 less. So I'm going to assume it's USB 3.2 gen1 which is the same 5gbps as USB 3.1 gen1.

Jeez, I hate the USB-IF's nomenclature...

Depends on what the actual problem is, I dropped mine so the internals are damaged. If you can still see all the details in disk utility and macOS isn't telling you that the drive "could not be initialized" you might still have a chance.

Yup, my WD Elements drive to was super unstable when unplugged without ejecting (accidental, try to eject your drives). Had to be fixed every time. Rarely had that problem with Seagate. Nearly every time I could just plug it back in and it'd be ready to go.

Is this shuckable? My 8Tb WD purple is getting low on space. Just might spring for this if I can convert to internal HDD.

What's inside? A SATA drive or is the USB soldered directly to the drive?

In past discussions on portable and stand alone USB drives it seems people want the pricing down to $15 (stand alone) to $18 (portable) per TB for it to be a steal of a deal kind of thing. As my prior posted indicated this WD Easystore drive has been down to the $89.99 range a few times in recent months. Which puts it at around $18 per TB.

For Costco members the 5TB Seagate portable USB drive gets down to the $89.99 price point from time to time as well.
