iPad 8 has twice the memory for $150 less. Sure the screen is not as good and the cpu is a lower model but most users won't know the difference for browsing the web, playing the odd game etc.

Decide if a better screen is worth the extra cost.

Although I agree with you, there are several factors to be considered.
1. iPad Air line won't be refreshed, so the price won't drop dramatically or even drop further at all.
2. We all know A12X has same performance as A14, so the updated iPad Pro will push current A12z lines to the new low price, which is $550 for the Apple refurb iPad Pro 11"(A12z), which has same performance as this air.
3. New A14 chip has better battery performance than old A12 chips, which is a big concern to some people.
Certainly, you should consider pro if you prefer FaceId, 120hz, quad speakers, like me. So it's purely ymmv. This price for 4th air is indeed a good price, at this moment at least.

Can anyone confirm the air 4 battery life? Quite a lot threads on line complaining about unusual battery drain
It is quite bad. I bought the Air 4 for my wife as she is a WFH teacher and she complained about it right away. I searched online and found similar complaints. Her old iPad (base model with A10 purchased in 2018) lasted much longer. Anyways, I changed some settings here and there and it got a little better but she's sometimes afraid it will die during her classes.

Not a bad deal! Would like to hear people's experience buying an iPad on Amazon.

Would also like to hear whether the iPad Pro 11 (2018 or 2020) is worth the extra money. I know the screen and speakers are better on the Pro than on the Air... Thanks for any comments!
To add to what others have said one exclusive feature for the iPad Pros are the 12.9 inch screen if you want and also 500gb/1tb models if you want. To certain workflows that added storage and screen make for a wildly different experience regardless of processor power.

Yeah my sixth gen iPad with the A10 has absurdly long battery life. Just looked it up and all base iPads seem to have a significantly larger battery than the Pro11/Air4. If the fancier screen and processors of the Pro/Air uses more power as well that would explain the battery life drop.

To add on to this, I own both the latest pro 12.9 with Promotion as well as an old iPad 6. Screen quality feels almost identical and I have no problems switching between the two. I notice the size difference a lot but quality no. No significant difference notetaking as well with the 'air gap' that totally exists on the base models but is totally overblown.

The standard iPad 8 is not laminated and I would not purchase a screen with an air gap; the iPad Mini 5's screen to body ratio/price to screen size ratio is the worst among the lineup. Both are on the bottom.
Quote from GooG6695 :
That's your opinion. If a fractional gap is worth spending ~$250 more to you, more power to you. I own the air 4 and a regular ipad and even using the pencil I can't even tell there's a gap on the regular ipad.
This.

I literally keep an Air 2 with a fully laminated screen right next to a 6th gen iPad on a shelf and swap between the two whenever one of the batteries runs down - and I NEVER notice which one I'm using by the screen alone. I consciously have to tilt the screen and actually look at the edges to check.

Honestly, the fact that's it's slightly thinner and lighter is of more interest to me than the inconsequential fraction of a fraction of an inch air gap - and neither of them is worth spending double the cost on. Honestly, it's why I never considered moving back to the newer Air or pro models in the past. The new iPad Air 4 at around this price is the FIRST model that ever made sense even considering to me when you consider that prior to this the base iPad was constantly on sale for $250 and the older generation Air 3 was at least double the price. With this new more 'pro' like Air that offers several quality of life improvements like reduced weight, screen gap, larger screen smaller bezels, etc - IN ADDITION to just the processor and ram bumps of old - this model is definitely worth considering. Especially at this price.

Having said that - I still stand by that the base model is still on a relative basis one of the best values in tablets you can buy. And if they ever drop them back to $250 they are still very compelling as complimentary devices for having around the house in addition to the higher end models.

As good of a deal as this is, 64GB storage is not enough. And the cost of one of these with 256GB is insane. Of course, Apple knows that 128GB is the sweet spot and chooses to not have that storage capacity in the Air

I don't know what you guys are doing to use up more than 64GB in 2021. Media streams (movies, music), I don't need 20 games downloaded at once and I can easily re-download one if I want to play it again, and all your photos/video get archived in the cloud.

I have a 512GB 2020 iPad Pro 11 and I'm currently using a whopping 33GB of local storage on it. Extra storage is the highest margin item that Apple sells.

As for the screen debate, it's obvious side-by-side the difference between a laminated and non-laminated screen. Ever use a cheap Android tablet? All are non-laminated. Apple's inherent screen quality is higher but not laminating it is inexcusable for something $300+. I sincerely hope once they ditch the home button on the standard iPad that they will move to a laminated display.

Here's a very quick comparison between laminated vs. non-laminated on an iPad: https://youtu.be/-WmBRTu9dsg?t=125

I can answer this!

Not all of us have a gigabit fiber connection, or use our iPads only at home. I frequently download shows while on public wifi somewhere to watch at home because my home network isn't fast enough to stream high quality. Or I set up my iPad to download shows overnight so I have something to watch on a flight. Or I might be biking in Moab, sleeping in the back of my van. Having shows, movies, music, etc.. stored locally for that is really nice!

All told I've got about 150GB of my 256GB iPad Pro full. Could I get by with less? Of course. But it's not worth the effort shuffling data in and out of the iPad instead of just paying a the premium up front.

Slightly better screen on the pro but the processor on this model is much better

Leakers claim new iPad pro will debut next month. I know this is a step down, but I'll be waiting before I pull the trigger on a device this expensive. Especially since the last gen iPad Pro might drop in price to similar to this.
