I did a search, could not find this item posted before. This was I think last year's Black Friday price for this laptop. While not the most up to date configuration, by any stretch, for the price point is still probably a decent deal. I did purchase the 3 years Walmart accident protection plan, for peace of mind. I need a decent laptop now for basic browsing and work tasks and I don't have $1k to spend for something I really want; this is ok for me.

The 14.1-inch Gateway Ultra Slim Notebook features a 1080p screen that brings a crystal-clear picture for any and all of your tasks. The Intel Core i5 processor lets you ease through your daily tasks. Tuned by THX™ audio products enable listeners to get the best audio quality possible by providing custom fidelity improvements, balanced reproduction, and optimal frequency response.

per this link: https://geekazine.com/cool/review/gateway-14-1-inch-ultra-slim-notebook-with-thx/

Bluetooth 5.1 and Wifi 802.11ac.

also: There is a 10-hour battery inside, and charging is not an issue. I was also impressed when I came back to the machine after a few days unplugged to find the battery was still at 90%.

The chip is only 1 GHz. That's pretty weak.
02-22-2021 at 01:08 PM
1 GHz is the base clock. It can go up to 3.5-3.6GHz in real life. It has 4 physical cores and upto 8 threads can be excuted at the same time. With 16 G DDR4 3200 DRAM and a SSD drive, I think this pc can handle music produciton at no issue. You can look up Logic or FL Studio for detail specs.

It might be safe to assume M.2 SATA on the second slot, which is probably why my NVMe didn't work.
That was in the back of my head .. would clone the current 256 onto a 512/1tb NVME, bench new drive to make sure it performs, then put old OS onto slot 2. I'm not sure how much of a market there is for that Foresee or whatever drive anyways Frown

What's the likely negative on this laptop, no USB-C charging?
DON'T just look at the specs. There's a reason why these Gateway laptops are on sale all the time.

Subpar display, keyboard, trackpad, speaker, cheap build quality

What's the point if your laptop can only process your computing tasks but you don't find it desirable to use?

Great specs!!

A couple of deal breakers for some (including me):

No USB-C charging. This is not a problem in itself, but I've forgotten the proprietary barrel plug chargers at home, had some break over time, that it's a huge pain to get another charger when you're out and about / traveling (visiting family, friends, etc). In 2021 I won't buy a laptop without USB-C charging because that one time you forget the proprietary charger at home means the laptop is a brick until you can spend $50 - $100 to buy a replacement last minute at Best Buy / Walmar, etc.

Second - a review states that the Power button is where the Delete button is. This might be an issue for people who are used to traditional keyboards where the power button is not on the keyboard.

For those two reasons, I'll look for another deal. This is a great deal for a great spec laptop if you can live with the downsides.
The 15in version has USB-C charging. The power button doesn't seem like a big deal to me, but to each their own.

The 15in refurb has come and gone twice (rose, then blue) around $330 after taxes. As long as it's really grade A and no issues, don't think it's going to get much cheaper than that.

I prefer the 14.1" version myself, IE this deal, over 15", since I have an extra monitor at home for larger display if needed.

A reviewer said he shut down his laptop 7 times in 1 day trying to delete something on a document he was working on...so it can be a big deal for some, LOL.

I got two of these on BF for my 12 yr olds. Is the build quality the best? No... but it is better than I expected for the price. That being said, my kids are not easy on their things and this has held up and performed great. They had Chromebooks and they hated them. They love these laptops. I did get them some wireless mouses to use and I think they prefer to use the mouse over the trackpad but there have not been any issues to speak of. As a sub-$500 laptop these are not a bad deal.

I would prefer the 14in too but not when it costs more and doesn't have USB-C charging.

That button .. you should get used to it, but again like I said to each their own. I use backspace more than delete, so I don't think it'll bother me. Will find out soon.

I think the weirder thing is the blend of arrows/numpad.

My kids were the opposite. They LOVE their chromebooks and barely use their Windows / Mac computers.

They have the cheap $100 Lenovo 100e, and they won't part with it. The main reason is it's fairly fast for what they need, and the battery lasts 2-3 times as long as Windows PCs.

They can use a chromebook all day and not worry about charge.

I still have to use Windows PC for some apps, but I find myself using chromebooks more and more because they are fast, affordable, and battery goes on for ages (and recharges super fast).

I'm still interested in a cheap ultrabook Windows PC for the kids so they can get experience with Windows, and do virtual video meetings which the cheap chromebook struggles with.

This is incorrect. Gateway is owned by Acer. We bought the 4600h Ryzen Gateway last year and it's actually pretty good quality.
That is correct. Walmart gateway is evoo. Evoo bought gateway licensing...

Does he ever specify the model? I watched where you linked and he's got some random 14in Gateway.

Not to mention it's in general - he's comparing to what looks like any budget. Not a real fair comparison for this laptop which probably costs less than everything else he reviewed ..

I replace school. Loaned chromebook cheap lenovo ideapad3 pentium gold $150. Added 8gb ram. They no complain on slowness while doing googlemeet virtual class.
Side effect:
They install minecraft for education ( free through school id)
And asked me to buy minecraft java.... oh boy....

Well obviously the "point" is that you are able to complete your "computing tasks" with this computer, whereas if you had no computer at all, you wouldn't be able to.

Are you expecting high-end components for a cheap price?

This laptop is great for a child learning over Zoom, student writing a paper, or elderly who just needs to check email and video call with family. Or anyone just browsing internet for that matter. Not everyone needs a thousand-dollar laptop.
