Green Top Hunt Fish [greentophuntfish.com]has the Mitchell 308 Pro Series Spinning reel on sale for 50% off MSRP: $34.99. Store pickup in Virginia is free, otherwise shipping is $10 which at $45 is still significantly cheaper than basspro [basspro.com]and cabelas selling the reel for $70. I do not own the reel myself so i cannot comment on the quality, but people on BPS rate it 4.2 stars on 100+ reviews.

Maybe I'm missing it. Where does it say same plant? Just because they have the same parent company, doesn't mean they're all made with the same materials or at the same plant.
I agree. I have the new version of the Mitchell 300 and a Penn Pursuit, both roughly the same price point and there is nothing that would make me think they are related. Both are great reels, though.

For those who look for a reel deal, check the Shimano FX 2500HG in Walmart for $19 everyday. 2+1BB, 6.2:1, 9lb drag, 8.8 oz. Made in Malaysia.

This overkill for trout?
What kind of trout? 12-14 inch brook trout then definitely, but if you're into 20+ inch rainbows, browns or even bigger lake trout then no this would work great.

I own this one too. My 8 year old learned how to cast an open bail with it and it serves him well. It's a perfectly serviceable reel, but it's not on par with the Mitchell.

The Mitchell sits somewhere between the Sienna and Sahara in the Shimano lineup.

The Sahara is my primary spinning reel and the Mitchell is my second. Both are great.

I also own a Sienna which is almost identical to FX for $10 more which I don't think worth it. The beauty of a quality and durable $19 reel like FX is you can use it in any case without any worry including surf fishing. There are cheaper ones but they won't last for a year (I've tried some). FX doesn't need to compare to this deal, it should be a front page deal every day. The new FX has instant anti reverse, and it is 6.2:1 (not 5.1:1) unseen in most spinning reels regardless price including this Mitchell. And don't forget, it is NOT made in China. FX is a Japanese reel made in another country while Mitchell is a Chinese reel sold by an American company.

Instant anti reverse? Walmart shows out of stock, not available for online order, ship to store, or store pickup unless I'm looking at the wrong item.

Yes, FX HG is instant anti reverse. The former FX FB is not. Right after my above post, the FX HG are all gone. I waited for months for Walmart to stock them, now I have to wait again in case I need another one. I regret I wrote that post. If you are willing to pay $10 more, the Sienna HG is identical plus one more BB, in stock in all Walmart stores. If you want to pay even less, the Ozark Trail is also in all Walmart stores. It has 5+1BB for $16. I had been using one for couple months while waiting for the FX HG, no issue, just a little gap in instant anti reverse. Strange, walmart.com does not show this reel.

Thanks, my shimano symetre is my favorite reel I own, but I need something cheaper for the kids that at the same time isn't junk. The reels on the dicks 2/$30 deals didn't last long.

You welcome. Yeah, too cheap unknown brands won't last. Found the Ozark Trail link:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-...l/50162461

Almost all people give it 5 stars, reflecting my own experience. Feels very solid, even more solid than FX HG and Sienna. One reviewer says: "Have had the first one for 2 years and it is still a favorite". Worth a try.

Thanks, we're still fishing through ice for a bit in NY, but come spring I'll see what they have on the shelves. The 2/$30 combos from dicks are Daiwa's, and work fine, just didn't last for us. I am not too upset, but figure I'll try something different.

Interesting, I also bought a Daiwa from Dick's on sale for $30. One day I fall down to soft soil and one of its internal gears broke. It won't be easy for me to buy another Daiwa reel.

Daiwa makes some really good reels, cheapos from any brand can be hit or miss on how long they last though. I'm going to try other brands for my cheap reels, but I wouldn't discount daiwa overall because of this.
