Quote from NeoCalSaint :
Theories are theories and stay like that until proven conclusively. .
I don't really care if you buy the evidence or not, but it would be nice if you stopped abusing the word "theory".

I would actually not recommend this book. It doesn't really explain or answer very much. While my 4 year old daughter likes it, she is way more intelligent than the book gives her credit for. She is very big into science and loves watching science based shows. She is unsatisfied by the answers in this book as they are often answering complex questions or processes with very basic one word answers. If you have a smart child, I would look for something that actually answers the questions and explains things in a scientific manner.

I'm surprised there are so many people who don't believe in evolution here.

Is it just evolution, or do you guys disbelieve other generally accepted scientific theories?

Like DNA? Molecules? Other galaxies? The periodic table? The Earth revolving around the sun? Relativity? Nuclear Physics? Etc.?

Quote from pmperry :
Well, that and the fact that, "Science Fact" is actually quite transient. Science Fact or Theory as you call it, changes with every new generation.

Here's an example for you.

Back in 1991 I was in College Biology and the text books taught that they could identify brain cells, because they didn't replicate. Fast forward 15 years and Scientists discovered that brain cells do replicate, just so slow that they never realized it before that.

So yes Science Fact is Fact, until it isn't, but is it ever really fact if it is eventually disproven?

This is partly why I believe they label it a Theory, because they know parts of it will be discredited over time. Also, Darwin didn't actually believe all the stuff we know of as Evolution today, so that's more evidence of the changing nature of science.
This sort of runs into philosophy/positivism/falsifiability.

In some very nerdy sense, nothing is truly a fact.

In a more practical sense, I don't think we have really 'discredited' Darwin and Newton so much as refined. There's definitely other areas of 'science' that we have discredited, like telepathy or phrenology.
