Costco will be offering $35 off starting 3/10 on the Seagate 5TB, bringing it to the lowest it has been, similar to last year.
This will be available both in-store and online @ costco.com.

NOTE: Doesn't start until 3/10!

Per Costco, $89.99 price is now good through 5/7/21:

"$35 manufacturer's savings is valid 4/5/21 through 5/7/21. While supplies last. Limit 3 per member."

So I just went to the store and got this. Less then 1 hour after plugging it in and writing to it and it started making the click of death and stopped responding. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and now it wont detect the volume and makes the usb disconnect sound after a couple minutes.
Yup sounds like a power issue. These things take up a decent amount of juice. If you can plug it into a powered USB hub, or using a USB-C cable those are the best.

I just installed this drive internally to my ps4. Hold about 400 digital games with 500gb to spare. This is the only 5tb drive you can install internally after shucking.

These are SATA 2.5" drives inside, 15mm tall. They will not fit in most laptops, and will not fit in the PS4 / PS3 without modification.

I have about 15 of these in a server in an array. Recovery and write speeds are sub-optimal because of the SMR layout, but read speeds are very quick. The trick to using them in a RAID array is to limit the write speed to prevent exceeding the PMR write buffer, which will then cause the drive to thrash and timeout as it tries to reshuffle data among the SMR zones .

In response to "Brand W is better, I had brand S drives die" and vice versa - I wouldn't go and say that any one brand is better than another. I've had drives from all brands die. In the server that uses 10 of these in a RAID array, I've had to replace two over the last 3 years.

Here's a snippet from that server.
Great info. What is the write speed limit?
Thanks.

My use case for this drive is to backup, and occasionally rewatch, 4K home videos and 4K photos. Would this be a good drive for that, or would I have issues because it's SMR and not CMR?
