Best Buy again slightly drops the price of the WD Easystore 5TB portable hard drive from $104.99 down to $99.99. They seem to do this every week or two now. No telling how long this slightly lower price will be.

Still a meh deal on a per TB price ($20 per TB) due to being a portable drive and not the larger dimensioned 3.5 inch desktop external drives that many buy and shuck.

And as previously mentioned in past discussions on this drive it is not shuckable as the USB port is part of the drive.

As a price comparison. Amazon has the WD 5TB Elements portable hard drive at $99.99 right now.

Treat it as if every hard drive will fail. The common phrase is 'two is one and one is none'. It's unlikely the 2nd drive (primary backup) will fail concurrently with the 1st, but you never know. That said, precious files should be housed on a 3rd drive (secondary backup), ideally offsite. Backup hard drives are no good if your house/apt burns down with all the drives inside. If you have the bandwidth to do so, cloud backups are a fantastic option for a 3rd drive/location (secondary backup). Cloud could be used as a primary backup (aka the 2nd drive), but it depends how quickly you would need to access/restore your files in the event of a drive failure and how fast your internet is.

So in your circumstance, get 2 external drives but don't get them at the same time or from the same store. Try to stagger their ages if they're going to be used simultaneously to reduce the likelihood of them failing together. If you're going to be plugging one in permanently and plugging the backup in at regular intervals to do the backups (if you're responsible enough to remember), then they can be from the same place/age/production since one is cold storage

Uh oh, now you've done it. Someone is likely to come along shortly and throw out the BackBlaze stats [backblaze.com] (even though they are for different drives) to support their claim Seagate sucks. laugh out loud

Most have their own personal hard drive horror, and click of death, stories from all drive manufacturers. Some have good luck with WD or Seagate, others don't. Years past Seagate did have one specific line of drives that were lemons and some use that as justification to avoid Seagate all together. Shrugs. Their choice.

Drives fail. Period. Back them up (which one should be doing for any critical or irreplaceable data) if one is worried about it.

Yes people are still buying large sized portable drives. For some they need the portability these types of drives offer. Much easier to travel with a portable drive like this than their larger desktop external drive counterparts. For others its the small form factor (like desk space) that is what they seek. Considering large SSD drives run upwards of $400 or more one could buy several of these drives for the cost of a single SSD drive of similar capacity. For some who do rotational backups its a fairly good cost savings to use mechanical drives even though they tend to be slower than SSD drives.

Generally it comes down to specifications and initial drive formatting. Some drives may be formatted specifically for use or compatibility with certain devices. One can reformat and repartition just about any hard drive to suit their needs but it is an extra step some prefer not to deal with. One can search to see if there are further differences, in particular read/write speed differences between the three drives. And game consoles may require a specific or certain type of drive to operate correctly or save games to them.

Without opening the cases and seeing inside, I'd guess the Easystore and Passport are identical consumer level drives and the Easystore just has a more inflated MSRP for whatever reason. The Black might have a faster hard drive or one that is designed to not park (sleep) as often for quicker response times but I'm not sure if they make a 5TB black and this model could just be for marketing purposes

Fwiw, WD makes 5 colors of drives correlating to their use.
Blue: Consumer, general purpose
Black: Performance
Red: 24/7 access (for NAS devices)
Purple: Surveillance (constant writes)
Gold: Enterprise (heavy workloads in servers, etc)

In the past the desktop external 3.5 inch Easystore USB hard drives were WD Reds. However within the last two years or so WD transitioned to using "white label" 3.5 inch drives (made by HGST) in their larger capacity desktop external Easystore USB hard drives. No idea what is in these portable Easystore's.

if you're backing up the computer, then the external hard drive is ALREADY a backup. The original content is still on the computer HDD. So if you add a second external HDD, you're really adding a 3rd version of the data. That's fine, but it seems highly unlikely that your computer HDD and your backup HDD would both fail at the same time.

At least between the ES and MP, not at all. The MyPassport has better casing, better encryption, better warranty, and lower failure rate. I wouldn't touch an EasyStore drive again after four failed on me.

I was sort of alluding to that people are buying 8, 10,12 Tb and up drives. 5's are pretty low end now.

People are often buying the larger external USB desktop drives to shuck and use the 3.5 inch hard drive either for NAS or in desktop's. In the past larger drives inside the WD Easystore (non portable) drives were 3.5 inch WD Red's. Any time the 4TB and larger external desktop Easystore's went on sale at Best Buy they'd sell out in minutes because people were buying them, shucking them, putting them in NAS enclosures.

People need larger drives these days for media storage. Either for their home theater systems where they stream from NAS storage, or for video/media editing.

These smaller sized 2, 4 and 5 TB portable drives still have their place, and uses. As we see some are buying them for use on gaming consoles to store their games. Portable drives like this deal are significantly cheaper (to the tune of 1/3 to 1/4th) then similar capacity SSD drives. These portable drives are easier to transport than their larger cousins. These portable drives don't require separate power supplies. And they look less conspicuous on desks.

Lukewarm. I would think it a little less robust than the MP as far as the case and shock protection goes. As for the drive within, I maintain my suspicion about the lots used for ES, but aside from the lack of MP encryption, I can't lump EM in with ES.

My opinion: MP >> EM >>>> ES.

Frankly, for me, 3TB is just as much of a deal killer.

I know deals will be posted for super cheap clearanced 1 and 2TB HDDs sometimes, but even if it were $20, you will hate hitting that ceiling when you get to it, and especially if you are looking at 5TB drives already.

I say that mainly in the vein of using it for multimedia storage, of course. If just for a backup, I could see lower capacities having some use, but then again, with data that's valuable, I'm still not gonna cheap out, but go with MPs instead.
