My local Costco has this hoop for $220. It seems the same as the one on the Spalding website for $599, except with a pad on the pole.

I'm going with Basegel combined with this product. I'm hoping with the combination of these 2 that my hoop won't be going anywhere. I like that the strap around the pole will provide more stability overall.

That looks just like a dog tie out [amazon.com] and some straps.

Yep. I was looking to put one together myself when I came across this. I couldn't find the right kind and size of all the straps, plus what I was finding was getting close to the same price as buying the kit from them.

Yes that's an option. I wonder how large the reservoir is on these.

I've seen that but that will still freeze, no? I am concerned with water freezing and splitting the base open, then the unit's basically trash.

Probably the most durable and heavy option but then the unit is totally immobile.
The best option is to get some sand tubes that are in the thick black rubber. Two or three of them on top of the base is sufficient. Then it's also easy to remove them and move the unit. Don't buy the sand bags in the cheap white plastic. Those will break down quickly and leave a mess. Another option is large concrete blocks.

Just picked one up. Box is approximately 57" x 35" x 10".
