Thanks OP. Have been eyeing Pacsafe packs for a while - and size seems perfect for a daypack for use in touristy areas. I'd also still recommend a money belt for best protection for passport/cash/cards.
But help me understand this, so you are in a high crime area ( bad idea to start ),and someone attempts to cut a backpack off you this prevents it? It seems you would still face a criminal holding a sharp object wanting your stuff lol...

It's pretty easy to slash and grab or slash without your knowing. Doesn't have to be what you're thinking of as a high crime area.

I get ya lol, just if they try and slash it ( since it's a backpack we are talking about two straps ) and if they can't cut it wouldn't it be likely they would just say "hey I have a knife, give me your bag"?
Pretty much all my backpacks have a waist strap and chest strap but I guess the theory is that they are going to just cut down the middle of the bag instead of the straps?

It depends on the bag, if it's a backpack you can slash the back and grab whatever is inside hoping it's going to be something valuable. If it's a shoulder bag you can cut the strap and yank the shoulder bag itself. The idea is you can slash and grab in a touristy area with lots of people around without anyone realizing what happened until after the fact. If people are not very attentive thieves can even simply walk up to your table and grab your stuff without you realizing it, this happened to my sister in law. A backpack/bag with anti-slash strap wrapped around table leg would have stopped that. On the other hand a confrontation involving a knife involves a lot of unwanted attention from onlookers and from police.
That said, while slash and grab is a legitimate tactic, it doesn't happen as often as people make it out to be. You're very unlikely to be a victim of slash and grab.
