You can get better sharpening stones for similar price range. Unless you're a professional sushi chef or you own a really high grade knife set, you'll probably don't want to go through the time and effort of using a whetstones. For cheaper knives, get a typical knife sharpener or a ceramic honing rod instead.

Thanks guys! Which sharpener or stones would be good to help me learn the correct angle(s)?
A matchbook. A matchbook under the spine of a knife will produce a satisfactory angle for the blade against the stone. I don't actually use a matchbook, but I have one in my imagination as I'm sharpening (with DMT).

The Worksharp Precision Adjust system makes sharpening dead simple. I just wish their stones were large enough to do a chefs knife in 1 pass.

I've looking to buy a set of good whetstones, but these look to be of questionable quality. Anyone have any experience with this product?
Thus set is sold by multiple sellers on Amazon. These will work for knife sharpening but not for plane blade that needs absolute flatness. These stones got out of flat relatively easily. The flattening stone helps but will also loose flatness over time

Took your advice, cancelled the order that I placed earlier today and bough this one [amazon.com] for $10 instead.

I don't understand about this deal though. There is 40+ thumb up but zero positive comments about the product. I check the fakespot and it got a grade B (hence the reason I orignally placed the order). Is this product really that bad or most commenters here are sharpener snoob/expert?
It might be a little bit of a snob/expert thing. I wouldn't consider myself either, but I am someone that's owned and used these types of generic kits when I was learning, and it didn't take me long to realize that the only thing worth using in the kits is the 400/1000. To someone that has zero experience it looks like a really good deal though (hence why I bought one when I was learning).

I tried oil stones and DMT too. I got about half way sharpening with the DMT when I realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.
I just sat there thinking how much time and effort I wasted trying to sharpen knives on low quality stones. Dmt is well worth the price of you regularly sharpen. And if not then the diafolds are 20-30 bucks anyway.

Does brand name in whetstone matter? Yes, according to my own experience. Get King brand and get ones made in Japan. Cheap ones I used, they break easy.
Moreover, I would not bother with 400 or 8000 grid stone, completely useless for any type of knife, unless you want be known as a fool.
