They say the king is radioactive. Not an April fools...
That's ok, people are radioactive too and the vast majority walk around with a device in their pocket that's as radioactive as their microwave. Not to mention imported fruits & veggies are irradiated upon entry to kill nasty bugs. So the kind of radioactive those stones are, is just fine.

Shows up as $27.99 (before tax) for me. Anyone have any idea how to get this for the price mentioned above?

It might be a little bit of a snob/expert thing. I wouldn't consider myself either, but I am someone that's owned and used these types of generic kits when I was learning, and it didn't take me long to realize that the only thing worth using in the kits is the 400/1000. To someone that has zero experience it looks like a really good deal though (hence why I bought one when I was learning).
I have a 800 Naniwa and a 1000/6000 combo King and 99% of the time I only use my 6000. 400/1000 is overkill if you take care of your knives and had them properly sharpened once.

Thanks for the reply. This set doesn't inspire confidence, honestly.
FJapanny.com recommends the King as well (https://www.japanny.com/pages/sel...ing-stones [japanny.com])
King 1/6 sucks, long soaking time, slow cutting, messy and dishing fast.

For those that want a better quality whetstone, look into the shapton ones...they're by no means high end ones, but much better than the double sided generic crap.
I own over 20 whetstones, yup that's including the shapton glass 30K and I have nothing but nice thing to say about Shapton Pro/Kuromaku, good price, splash n go, cut fast, slow dishing and it came with a box double as a sharpening base.

I'd recommend skipping the cheap off brand, and just get the stone that has been sold for over 150 years.

https://www.amazon.com/Norton-614...813&sr=8-2

If you want an angle guide and just want to sharpen kitchen knives and a few pocket knives, then I'd recommend this kit:

Thanks for your comment... Ordered the Norton stone and also got the oil with it. So glad I bought this, definitely puts a very nice edge on it.
