sapphire?
No.... Saphhire has a 9 rating on hardness scale.. Hardlex has a 8 rating. Mineral has a 5 or 6 rating.

I have never ever scratched or cracked the hardlex. I am careful but I have accidentally bumped it at times and it is perfect.

This video shows how impressive the hardlex is and not that far off from saphhire.

All seiko's suffer from qc issues like that except grand seiko and maybe some of the high end divers
All? No way. I have 4 seiko and they all have perfect alignment. You need to try them and then talk about their quality.

Stop being so literal. Bezel misalignment is a well known qc issue. So much so it's a meme at this point.

Silly assumption. All? No. What percentage of Seiko watches do you think are messed up QC to label "all"? Ridiculously exaggerated from mostly seiko haters who never had them or others who bash it to justify paying huge bucks for their watch. Also bad experience is heard far more than all the good experiences that are quiet. People don't go post all their good experience but when people have bad experience, they definitely post about it.... Considering how many Seikos are sold throughout the world? There will be some misaligned at rare instances but Ridiculously exaggerated. Also people need to remember the majority of Seiko prices.... Not exactly high priced luxury watch where perfection for every single watch is a must.

This watch has a 4.5 out of 5 star rating on Amazon. It looks like people are quite happy with its quality. The Pepsi color bezel and the black face also have 4.5 ratings as well.

Here is a link from Amazon which shows the Seiko 5 Sport watches being very highly rated among verified purchasers who actually have the watch. Seiko has been around since 1881. They are a highly respected brand and know what they are doing.

I generally agree. Folks should also keep in mind that Seiko's huge sales volume means that even if they have the same % of QC issues as smaller brands, the absolute number of QC issues will be higher.

If I sell 100 watches and 1% of my customers have a cosmetic issue, that's just one dude and maybe he doesn't even notice. But Seiko sells millions of watches a year so 1% of their customers really adds up.

That said, a lot of watch bloggers (who are certainly not "Seiko haters") have comments on Seiko's increased number of cosmetic issues in recent years.

Personally I still buy Seiko with confidence. Especially from an official retailer like Macy's where returns should be no trouble.

This is correct in my opinion. Total sales volume is also key. It's probably true that Seiko has 100x the QC issues of smaller brands. But they sell probably 10,000x the units.
Yeah you're probably right about that. Its the issue of scaling up. If you only sell 50 watches a year, you can spend 5 days on it and build it by hand, check alignment. The hands can be colored steel, dial made of enamel, etc. But if you're selling 50,000, for a lower pricepoint, you can't have that amount of dedicated time for QC, but still have the appropriate process in place so that you only tiny fraction aren't perfect and gets out. Overall, I've been happy with the $60 to the $500 seiko watches.

Heck, I even bought a few on ebay from the 1960 for dirt cheap. Okay the movement wasn't perfect, but the alignment of the hands and the overall quality was very good. Managed to swap out the movement for an NH35 so I have a hacking/handwinding movement with 40+ hour power reserve in a 60 year old watch with acrylic crystal. Talk about an upgrade a grandfather would be proud of.

The non diver seiko 5 sports (pilot bezel) are also on sale
Yeah I think the non-diver bezel versions might be the true heroes of the Seiko 5 lineup, even better than the one OP linked to.

This one on the metal bracelet (there are also several other color variations, though Macy's doesn't have them) could be a true "one watch collection" watch.

Would work for everything from casual to dress; would work in situations where the diver version is a little too sporty/blingy.

The NATO strap version is nice too. Doesn't dress up like the shinier version on the bracelet, but you can buy yourself a handful of NATO straps and match the watch to your outfit of the day.

Islander watches are a fantastic value, and Marc from Island Watch is a great guy who's done a lot for the watch community with his YT videos and such. If anybody in the watch world deserves our money it's him.

(Also, most if not all of the Islander watches are powered by Seiko movements!)

But man, I just can't get past that Islander logo. Holy crap, it looks so budget. Looks like a logo for a brand of WalMart-exclusive kids watches or something. I really hope he revises that at some point, or at least stops putting it on the watch dials.

Just comparing scratch resistance, it's worth noting that the Hardlex is substantially better than standard mineral glass.

Mineral glass is about a 5 on the Mohs scale, Hardlex is around an 8. A sapphire watch crystal would be about a 9 and diamond is a 10.

Also, supposedly these Seiko 5 Divers have a lot of overlap with the more popular Seiko mod parts, so it should be possible to swap in an aftermarket sapphire crystal if this hardlex ever gets too banged up.
Can confirm that SKX mod parts from Namoki, DLW, et al fit the 5kx line.

Built myself a poor man's GMT with the specific model pictured, swapping out the bezel & a 12 hour insert, plus a Strapcode jubilee.

I just picked up a Seiko 5 for $163 - no shipping or tax. Blue dial and black rubber strap. Lucked out and alignment was pretty good.

I can't share the link - but if you search - SRPD93 via Green Toe - you should be able to find it.
