With Amtrak, you're basically getting the worst of all worlds: expensive, slow, unreliable, cramped quarters, shared bathrooms, lousy food, and it's not like you can enjoy any of the destinations mid-way (you're merely passing through).

Aside from perhaps the very scenic routes in the PNW, what's the point over flying or driving?

I got the email for this yesterday, and tried to talk my wife into it. She has severe arthritis, and thinks it would end up being too uncomfortable, and she is probably right. That and having to share a bathroom. Awesome deal though. Round trip from central Illinois to west coast and back was around $650. That includes 4 overnights and meals if I read it correctly.

Will probably do car instead since we can stop anytime and anywhere along the way. This is all contingent on endpoints being open and she being 2 weeks past second vaccination. We may try a tentative quickie weekend in St Louis or Chicago in July just to see how things go without committing to a week long jaunt elsewhere.

wouldnt it just be easier to fly? about the same price and get you to your location in 3 hours instead of 20

the only benefit i see is banging your wife or girlfriend on the train in a private room =)
Better to do that with someone else's wife or girlfriend tbh

This sounds like a fun travel idea with my kids. They're 7 and 4. What kind of extra cost might it be to add the extra 4yo, or any way of getting him for free? I assume there are ports for charging. How about wifi?

This actually seems really cool, I might be down. I took the Southwest Chief from Chicago to LA a few years ago, took me a couple days but it was a really cool experience. You meet some interesting people and see a lot of America on the way. I only had a coach seat so it wasn't that comfortable at night, but this might make it even more fun.

Amtrak is just a far more pleasant way to travel, in my opinion. No airports, no airport security, no ridiculous baggage rules, plenty of space onboard, you arrive/depart right in the city center instead of the outskirts, can bring any food/drinks you want, etc. Idk which route you took but I've always had tons of room on Amtrak. Much more comfortable than flying.

It's not for every trip but I've enjoyed every Amtrak trip I've taken and found the journeys quite memorable.

I'm hoping to do NY to Montreal soon. Supposed to be beautiful.

I have the same question too. In the website, they're belong to unaccompanied minors (7 & 4 years old). Can I just book 1 roomette: me and my 2 kids? Or 2 roomettes?

They shouldn't be unaccompanied though. However, that does sound kind of nice to send the kids away on the train journey for a while.

Can I do Buffalo to Las Vegas with this? I am intrigued, but when I looked at the timetables,I did not see a route. I decided to ask because....the website is a bit "different".
