I loved the trains back in Europe but the prices here are just ridiculous. So I have to drive a Porsche to save on tickets.

They are not cheap in Europe either. In fact, if you take into consideration the distance it is propably cheaper in here. for example, I paid €70 for a tocket from Hamburg to Dusseldorf which is just ~200 miles

But, I would guess you can score a deal on some tickets if you buy befoehand. With Amtrak it is not the case at all

In Europe, if you want cheap travel you either opt of Flixbus or some low-coster airlines. I flew from Germany to London for €10 - not a joke

Trenton to New Haven and back is $135 on Acela. 150 miles. Should I mention $6 per gallon gas price in Europe? I love trains but I don't see me paying $230 for RT trip for me and my GF which would cost $50 in gas and tolls in a passenger car. And my car has like 22 mpg if the wind is blowing into the right direction. Put parking fees on top (at least $15) and it makes more sense to lease a camry for $200 than to ride a train.

Another over priced mode of travel subsidized by American tax payers so corporate America can have reduced fares.
Really? You think Amtrak sleeper cars are full of corporate types? Seriously, it's all vacationing geezers. This is for people who prefer comfort, have lots of time and no one in accounting asking why it cost more. That is very much *not* corporate America.

Coast Starlight, Seattle-Los Angeles. The CA Zephyr through the Sierra Nevadas is also supposed to have great views.

No idea how they can enforce this but know that they are requiring masks now even in your private room. It has been announced on board yes even when sleeping. This was not the case when I took the Zephyr last summer. Masks required but not in room.

do we have to use the auto train option for this one? Sanford depot is about 10 minutes from me, and I hadn't heard of Lorton but northern VA close to Baltimore.
Lorton is northern VA. Baltimore would be far from lorton. Especially in this traffic. You could also do union station in DC.

I was looking at union station or lorton to new Jersey.

The Coast Starlight route from LA to Seattle (or Portland) is amazing! HIGHLY Recommend! Also, when you book ask for the Coast side! Bring cards or games as it can be a little boring sometimes but it is super fun to do in a roomette! Also, you will get great photos! Try to time your dining with coastal stretches if you do not get a coast side roomette!

Also FWIW, when I went you had a private bar car that hosted wine tastings of the various regions you passed through. And by tastings, it was basically all the wine you could drink from SLO, Napa, Sonoma, Oregon and Washington in a private window car going through some amazing scenery! COVID has probably killed that perk, but maybe not...

If you are vaccinated and want to do this route for a vacation and then fly back you should...
We have to be vaccinated for this deal?

Just checked: downtown Boston to downtown Manhattan: $29 each way regular train. For the sake of argument, the IRS allows $0.53/mile to cover fuel, wear, insurance etc, for business travel by car. Its around 200 miles each way so ~$100 plus $25 per day to park. Both ways with one night parked would be $225 but of course you can put more than one person in the car.

Given what Rt 95 through Connecticut is like, it might even take about the same amount of time, around 4 hours. Its not for everyone and not for every trip but it is cheap.
