Someone with more knowledge than me talk me out of picking this up. It seems reasonable at this price point, and the various GPU shortages don't seem to be going away anytime soon...

picked one up for this price in December, however I bet most would say to wait for the next version of this with the 3060.

Better to get open box from Best Buy for $950ish. I got mine in January. The box was not pretty, but the laptop was mint.

Next version is already available at BestBuy and I have posted that too here. Comes with 5900HS, 16GB DDR4 3200, 1TB SSD, RTX 3060 Max-Q (60W + 10W with Dynamic Boost) and a faster 144 Hz 1080P Panel and priced at $1500.

Was yours "satisfactory" or "excellent" condition?

Picked one up in January at this price, great little machine. Only notable cons I would say are the fans can get quite loud (this can be managed somewhat with fan control software, but unavoidable under gaming load) and some people have wonky issues with the laptop drawing too much power coming out of sleep. I disabled sleep and replaced it with hibernate and no longer have power draw issues. Overall, the laptop has the power for running most games on decent settings and once you've sorted out any battery drain issues it gets good battery life for a "gaming" laptop when used for daily use.

Difference between 2060 and 3060 is small because of power limitations. The performance improvement Nvidia got from 2000 to 3000 was due to power increase. Technically the biggest benefit is the CPU, going from Ryzen 2 to Ryzen 3.

It's great for the price, I ended up returning mine for the G15 GA503. Everything is better about the G15, but I ended up paying $1700 for it. I don't plan on upgrading for at least 3 years though.

If you pulled the trigger on this, I'd recommend doing a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro, not installing Armory Crate, and disable Processor Performance Boost Mode in power settings so the fans shut up. There's a lot of threads on how to set it up so it's a great machine. I'd go for open box to save some money.

It has a bad display with horrific response times 25ms GTG which means it isn't physically capable of 120hz as advertised and there is visible ghosting. The laptop runs hot and fans get loud, it does not perform well in the thermals department. If you don't need a 14" laptop then never buy a 14" laptop(if we're talking gaming). A still lightweight 15" will offers miles better performance and thermals along with other notable upgrades because the chassis isn't so thermally constrained and small.

Is "Max-Q" for the graphics processor a euphemism for it being shackled?

Most insightful and very valid. This should be added to the wiki for every gaming laptop.
