One tier - it's the 800 series, not the 900 series. It's comparable to the 800h from last year. 60hz, not 120hz. No local dimming. The 900/90 series has both those features. Also, keep in mind it has an IPS panel instead of VA (great for wide viewing angles, brightness, and color accuracy but less contrast than the 900h for dark room viewing).
FWIW, the RTINGS review of the X80J should be available for all on Thurs. or Fri. this week. Test results are currently available to those with insider access (I don't have). Also, the X80J is the Sony entry level model this year. One tier down from the X90J will be the X85J. It bridges the gap between the X80J and the X90J, and seems to be an interesting offering; it will have a native 120Hz panel and HDMI 2.1, although it will not have local dimming or an ATSC 3.0 tuner like the models above.
Just purchased my second Sony 900H Tv set. Super content with the picture quality, refresh rate and everything. Im super curious whether to keep this or move to the HDR X80J. I believe this does not have VRR, its just 60hz, and no HDMI 2.1. Can someone confirm? Thank you.

That is correct, and as mentioned above in a post by OP, this also has an IPS panel and no local dimming. For overall performance you are better off with the 900H.
The first rule of Slickdeals is you can't talk about the toe that is green. You just have to go there and make an offer, they'll probably come back with 1050 with tax.
I wanted to add, for apples-to-apples comparisons, Sony doesn't have a basic budget/non-WCG TV line like the Samsung Crystal or LG 7000 series. All of Sony's TVs have Wide Color Gamut/Quantum Dot tech (called Triluminous), so the X80J should compare well with the Samsung QLED Q60A and LG NanoCell 81 when shopping around. Just a matter of if you want IPS or VA panel tech depending on your viewing environment.

This is the 2021 update to the 800h, so it's one tier down.
Worse, this is one step below the x900h or the new x90j, but also significantly cheaper.
What is"one tier?"
