I have just about every DeWalt tool known to man, both corded and cordless. I own this, the 996, and the 12v Max drills. I used to use this almost all the time, only grabbing the 996 for heavy duty work.

Then I got the 12v Max tools. The drill, the driver, and the Impact. I don't touch my Atomic stuff anymore. The 12v Max line is so, so much better.

So while I do think this is a decent deal, I would recommend the 12v Max line over the Atomic line.

I have this drill, even considered getting a second when I saw this. A have a few drills at home, some Makitas (a few years old) along with one of their top end models, the Dewalt Powerdetect Drill/Driver (DCD998), and a M12 installation driver (changeable heads).

About 90% of the time this is my go-to tool for drilling and screwing, it's comfortable in my hand, relatively lightweight, small and convenient and it just works for most tasks. Last few months I've been working on a remodel at my parents home and had several of my drills are sitting out for use. This one gets grabbed the most by everyone in the family. People even wait rather than grab some of the others (though the M12 does get used too).

I think for MOST home use/projects this will more than suffice. It's probably not going to drill concrete and it might not do everything quite as fast as a top end model, but the weight savings and comfort is worth it.

The batteries ... well I have like 8 of the 1.3 amp batteries and I wish they offered just a 2 or 3 amp instead. The 1.3 are lightweight, but the 2's aren't much different in size and weight and I like being able to actually check battery drain instead of waiting til it bogs down or stops.

I got this drill and the impact driver with a bonus circular saw for $200 with the bag charger and 2 1.3s. (Probably 3-4 years ago off of a slickdeal.)

I really like the atomic drill and driver. I love that they are smaller for most everything and the larger projects probably don't take all that much longer. 3 in. screws go in pretty quick but I've seen the bigger drivers where it's like instant.

I know neither is XR, but how does the Atomic compare to the standard 20 volt brushless? Same everything except for drill. https://slickdeals.net/f/14987852-dewalt-20-volt-max-1-2-in-brushless-cordless-drill-charger-included-and-2-batteries-included-99?v=1

I haven't used either but the UWO rating for both is the same, 340, so they should have similar or the same power. The atomic is 1.2" shorter and a quarter pound lighter.

It's small and light. I can put both the drill and driver on my belt and it's pretty easy moving around...

Last I looked into it, 20v Atomic seemed less attractive than the 12v dewalt system. I think the Atomic line was a value play against the "down-market" Ryobis of the world, whereas the 12v system is still the premium, best technology whose goal is to make the tool just as small as they can get it at the highest performance they can.

It is the DCD791, assuming you don't want hammer drill functionality. 460 UWO, 3.4 lb, 6.9" for the 791 vs 340 UWO, 2.4 lbs, and 6.3" for the DCD708 in this deal.

Another comparison point in the Dewalt family is the xtreme 12V drill, DCD701. 3/8" chuck vs 1/2" for the other two, 250 UWO, 1.9 lbs, 5.97". It uses different batteries of course but at least the chargers are compatible with both.
