Netgears firmware is trash. In fact, my R7800 X4S got updated with new firmware, and multiple items broke. The radios weren't working correctly, devices wouldn't stay connected, throughput stability issues, VPN was flat out broken and irreparable. And this happened on multiple different firmwares. And the -only- way to fix it, was to reset my config back to stock, and rejoin every. single. device. As well as reconfigure my entire network. Worst part, is your config can't be exported to another netgear device, it has to be the same one. Well this all happened BEFORE the "final blow". At some point, the router simply became entirely unresponsive. Couldn't access it directly via IP, couldn't get to the GUI, nothing was working anymore. But the hardware looked like it was still working fine....So as a last ditch effort I flashed the router with OpenWRT. And guess what? Everything works perfectly now. Everything. Not a single f'ing problem.

So, do I recommend Netgear? No, not for the average user at all. The hardware is great, but the monkeys writing firmware for Netgear are complete idiots. Save your money. Unless you're a systems and networking engineer like myself, it will be an exercise in futility.

I had this router. It's great but yes after updating the firmware. I was getting drops often but it seems to be a hit or miss with others who own it.

Used to own, so what's better that's cost effective? More importantly, are any wifi 6 routers wifi 6e compatible?

No, because then it would be a 6E router.

I got this router back in March. So far so good with what feel like very fast speeds. Haven't experienced any issues with wifi drops or firmware upgrading, so maybe I've gotten lucky? The Netgear app was easy enough to use for initial setup and basic checking in, but I do still use the web interface now if I want to poke around at other settings they make available, although still limited compared to other routers I'd say.

I purchased this and gotten random drops on 2.4ghz band. 5ghz has had no issues and speed is amazing.

Between this and the Netgear Mesh three boxes for $149, which works better for a 3000 sqft house?

Their 6e version is about to come out, hence the lower price

Things to keep in mind:
- 6e is much, much better for future proofing (uses additional frequencies, people have been waiting for years for this)
- It's not mesh, so limited range
- Netgear support is terrible/nonexistant

This is a good buy if you fit the use case: a strong, high performance router for your current devices., and your range is not super far (in which case you'd want mesh, or maybe add an extender).

It's First Gen and not even Quad Core, or even WiFi 6e certified. Pass

You gotta get WiFi 6e
