Unless you're not going to need a rental car for some reason (like if you have friends/family there), take a look at those rates before you book.

6,000 miles round trip LAX to JNU is absolutely awesome, but then $1,361 a week for a Toyota Corolla...
Juneau has a great bus system you don't really need a rental car. Bus goes to glacier as well (for example)
Flights are crazy cheap to Alaska right now. Booked one for $198 from Minneapolis.

But be aware, there's nothing for places to stay (without significant expense) and nearly no car rentals available. Friend just booked a full-sized car for 2 weeks there (one of the last available) and it cost $3000. That's right, be basically paid the lease for the next 9 months on the thing, for 2 weeks of use.

People have been renting U-Hauls because there are no cars to rent and they're cheaper.

Just because the flight is cheap, doesn't mean the rest of the visit will be.

Is that some crazy Covid-era type pricing (like what people are seeing in Hawaii), or is a rental car always that expensive in Alaska?

I got an intermediate in Fairbanks for $185 last March, but that was thanks to booking way early. There's usually a bit of a premium to Alaska rentals, but not anywhere near this.

Rental car prices are bonkers pretty much everywhere right now since they sold off too much of their fleets last year, and they're not making enough new cars fast enough. But Alaska and Hawaii are especially nuts.

I saw that also but I rarely use my miles so even if I have to eat them if prices don't come down, oh well.

I think (don't quote me on this!) that SkyMiles are currently fully refundable right up to 24h before the flight. Maybe not Basic Economy, though. I was thinking of making a booking and then just hoping that the situation fixes itself between now and late July.

Great deal! Booked from ATL to ANC for July 9-15 for the family of four. We'll figure out the itinerary and ground transportation later.
