Make this yourself: 1 part borax, 3 parts sugar, slowly add water until honey like in consistency, place near ant issue. you can make tons of it for pennies.
This stuff does work!
Ants are either in sweet or protein cycle and forage for it. You can't tell which one they will go for without trying. That's why often exterminators set up both baits at the same time.
Also spray the perimeter of your dwelling.
That said, terro may work fine for minor infestations provided they are foraging for sweet

While these do work decently, I find them hard to tear open, and they can seep product out into the floor, making a sticky mess. I'd recommend the kind you can stick in place for indoors, as it hides the trap a bit and keeps it from getting bumped.

Now that I know these can be made easily, I'll just whip up my own. Thanks to those posting the recipes.

Speaking from experience and only for Argentine ants, this may work indoors if you have a minor infestation, but if there are multiple nests and not enough bait, it will just end up attracting more ants inside your place. I recommend first trying outdoor baits, sprinkling diatomaceous earth in problem areas, and sealing any cracks. 80% of an exterminator's time is spent locating the nests, so before killing off the ants, try to follow the trail to see where they are coming from.

Another observation is the opening of these is very small so not many ants can go in at a time and sometimes the opening gets blocked. The liquid itself is effective for sweet eating ants, but the vessel could be improved.

Yeah, the blister plastic on these make them prone to leak as you open them or spill easier after opened, but the price is actually cheaper than the big bottle per oz. (~$1.50 here vs $2.30). I prefer the solid stakes for ease of use and durability. The liquid doesn't seem to draw them in but works well if you drop it right in their path and some will swarm around it while others pass it by.

These are a mixed blessing. If you have a serious infestation the poison in these work too fast to really permeate the colony. A pest control tech explained this to me because I had been using them for years dealing with sugar ants. He said that the bait pros use has a longer delay before it works, so it can reach deeper into colonies. This stuff is too fast acting, which is why these traps end up full of dead ants and the ants continue coming.

I've had no lasting efficacy with these and sugar ants, as well as wood eating red ants. YMMV.

As an aside: He did also say never to use repellents because those can actually increase the problem where the ants will divide around repellents and end up creating a new colony. He also said that Hot Shot baits were better because it was basically a milder dose of the exact same stuff he uses.

Hope this helps.

Advance 375 granulated bait was much more effective for me and made less of a mess, but I had a SEVERE infestation which took me a while to figure out how to control.

Hm well I followed the instructions but for some reason I could never get rid of them. Don't know why. I tried like three times over the years.

terro uses borax to kill ants. borax is used in household items such as laundry aids and soap. treat borax like any household cleaner, and do not supply it to your children.

Agreed, my experience mirrors this. A while ago, these seemed to work better but not recently. No matter how many of these i would put out, they just kept coming with dead ants all around it. Optigard ant along their trails eliminates them in a day or two completely.

Thanks for recommending that, I'll check it out. The image alone pretty much looks like what my pest control guy uses.
