This deal worked for me, but I had a terrible time getting Alexa to order the right thing. I wanted a specific book from a series, and Alexa tried to order the entire series for like $60 and then other random books with titles that were close, but definitely not the right book.

I looked the book up on Amazon on my computer and looked at the URL to see the item ID (looks like "B00514HX3F"). Then I said "Alexa, order B00514HX3F". I doubted whether it would work, but it did! Alexa read off the correct title of the book, indicated that the $5 promo had been applied, and confirmed that I wanted to order it.

Hope that helps anyone who might want to use this promo, but is struggling to get Alexa to cooperate.
Credit is applied at the time you order. In other words, the purchase is discounted by $5. I just ordered a book that is normally $7.29 and it was $2.29; when you order the book, Alexa will state the adjusted price and inform you that the $5 credit was applied before you confirm the purchase.
Here's how you check if the credit applies BEFORE buying!

On any device (including the Alexa app), say this phrase:

She should respond with "(Your book's title) by (your book's author). The Kindle ebook is (price) after a $5.00 Alexa-exclusive ebook credit. Would you like to buy it?"

I've tested a few different books on Echo Dot 3, Echo Show, Echo Show 5, and my Alexa app. This should be foolproof!

Be careful, if you have Amazon slow shipping credits, they usually get used first. So if it's a $5 book and you have $2 in credit, the $2 will apply first. Can anyone confirm if that's the case here?
Had $2 in credits, bought a book via Alexa and it only applied my $2 no-rush credits...refunded that book, ordered it again. Both times, the $5 credit didn't apply (the $2 credit wasn't refunded either, but oh well). 🥴

I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Anyone have a list of $1 books so I can pick one that doesn't suck to use up the rest of my credit? Big Grin

Thanks, worked perfect except one thing. I didn't have 'voice purchasing' set on my Alexa app. Alexa advised me, I went to my phone and set it up, then reordered. Great deal. I guess this is Amazons effort to 'break the cherry' on voice purchasing from an Echo....just what I don't need. I already by too much from Amazon. Thanks OP.

I was super careful to follow all the instructions, made sure the book I purchase qualified, then ended up being charged full price and had to cancel the order.

FFS! That was painful! I went down my wishlist and Alexa wanted to order a bunch of random items, some of which I have no idea how she concluded that was what I wanted... Eventually I found a title that was recognized and it went flawlessly. I tried author name and even the asin# in attempts to order one book that I really wanted but it just wouldn't do it. 12 minutes of frustration, and a bit of laughter, but I got it to work. 😁

wish Amazon made it possible to buy kindle ebooks as gifts using Alexa, but apparently not

also would make it much easier if you could buy books by ASIN since Alexa is brain-damaged about recognizing requests (and spends a lot of time interrupting you before you finish)

There could be a trick to use if you want to combine this deal with gift-giving. I haven't tried it myself, but one could:

Order a super cheap book, .49-.99. Then the remainder should remain as a promotion on the account. For that it appears one can order normally via browser/app. So... I assume that could be used to buy an ebook as a gift?

It's not the full $5, but it seems like it should work for whatever amount remains. But I haven't tested this, and for all I know there could be some weird amazon rule against using any promo at all for gift-giving.

This worked for me using the Alexa app. The credit was mentioned by Alexa and it even asked if I wanted to buy it. According to the notes, it says Alex app shouldn't work, but it did. It also included my $5 author specific promotional credits, so the $10 book was free. Thanks and thanks OP too!
