Decent deal if you need to buy now, though the available sizes are a bit limited. Amazon occasionally has 50% off deals on the Freerider Pros that may be worth waiting for. I picked up my most recent pair there 3 months ago for $75.

Five Tens are considered the best mountain biking shoes if riding with flat pedals due to their very sticky soles. Don't believe they even make shoes for clipless pedals.

Only negative (I've heard) is they aren't the best option if you ride in wet, muddy conditions.

The soles are very grippy. That combined with various pedals, e.g. some race face chester pedals, you'll stick like glue.

So, I never have luck finding size 15 FiveTens on sale (or even in stock, though are currently on Adidas.com). I have an old pair of stretched out Emerica skate shoes that work okay, with a set of Chesters. Are FiveTens more "rigid" than typical skateshoes (especially current ones)? I recently got a pair of Vans OldSkools that are insanely grippy, but haven't tried them on my bike, since they are my main casual shoe. Would the Vans work just as well as the FiveTens, since they are generally cheaper?

I don't typically buy shoes online unless they offer free return shipping, so this is a long shot anyway...but does anyone have any idea how these actually fit? Adidas website has people saying that they fit true to size and then someone saying they had to buy a whole size larger...
That would be the difference between a little snug 11.5 or the 13, both available as of right now.

Five Tens have a heavier shank running the length of the shoe which definitely adds rigidity and support much better than a typical pair of skate shoes would provide.

I rode with vans when I first started mountain biking, and my arches would be destroyed after a couple laps. Went to the freeriders and have never had that feeling.

Also the reinforced toe box has probably saved at least two broken toes when I slammed my toes into a rock at 25+ mph on two separate occasions.

I certainly wouldn't say far from norm. I'm in north Jersey and I would guess that it is pretty even. I ride clipless and so do both my kids. My wife is on flats. I coach a kid's team and more than half are on flats, but once they are more experienced, many switch to clipless. With that said though, Five Tens and good pedals are pretty similar to clipping in when it comes to minimizing slipping off the pedals. I do have a pair with cleats, by the way, so they do (or did) make them.

Their Hellcat Pro and Kestrel Pro's are clipless. But yeah, they're known for their sticky soles on flats so I wouldn't necessarily consider them top-tier in the clipless category like I would for the flats category.

I wouldn't say far from the norm. Maybe for just DH, but for XC clipless is the norm and for Enduro it's around 50/50. I ride clipless but keep a pair of flat pedals and Five Ten's in my truck for when I'm riding DH or if it's snowy/muddy conditions because it's a pain in the ass to clean out the cleat every time I put my foot down in mud/snow.
