Depends on your use case. A desktop consumes more electricity, larger, noisier, but is more powerful for desktop applications. Pi's are opposite plus has GPIO header for projects and expansion HATS.

The Aluminum edition case appears to be a remarked FLIRC case, which was the original Pi passive cooled case, but IMHO the newer Argon Neo, iUniker, and Geekworm passive cases are superior. They tend to have contact sinks for chips other than the cpu on the Pi that produce heat, and gaps for GPIO and camera ribbons. Search "pi 4 passive aluminum case" on Amazon for examples.
It's overkill for the pi4, but pihole [pi-hole.net] is amazing. It's a network wide spam filter. No more ads on mobile
I'm pretty sure that's what they were trying to say with the "overkill" part, though to be fair they didn't word it well.

I'm seeing a 20% off coupon on the extreme Kit, making it ~ $120 + tax. That seems like a SD.

Are any of the options a good deal to run a media/backup center? Have a 12TB external disk I could use for storage.
These are great for NAS as long as you configure it properly. I have my Pi 4 (4 GB) booting from a Kingston A400 120GB SSD (cheap and fast) on USB 3 port 1 and a WD Red 4TB (very reliable) on USB 3 port 2. It's using Ubuntu 21.04 (couldn't use 20.04 LTS due to a Bluetooth bug but will move to 22.04 LTS when the day comes) running Docker, Portainer, Nextcloud, MariaDB, HomeAssitant, SmokePing and a few others. Runs smoothly and the best part I max out only using like 18-20 watts of power.

Side note: Nextcloud is only used by 2 of us and I disabled unneeded features and optimized the config. If you have more than a few Nextcloud users you might be better off with a true NAS device. It's by far the most resource intensive of all my containers.

The raspberry board is really very small, I said the size of a card,
but it is good, I notice that the protective case heats up, but I imagine it is because it dissipates heat passively without a fan, which is excellent and without noise.

I've been using the pi400 for wiring closet hosted projects. The keyboard may get in the way in some settings but so far I just throw it on top of something else.

Late last year, I was looking at ARM SBCs to use as a home media server (Jellyfin). However, I found that used business desktop computers ARE dirt cheap. Much lower than $200.

On (the big auction site) I scored an Elitedesk 800 SFF with an i5-4590, 8GB of RAM and a 2TB hard disk. All this for $110, and there were plenty of similar options when I was searching.

Something to think about for anyone who's project doesn't need to be small, low power, or require the expansion header on the Pi.
This is so true. Applause
If you do not mind the power consumption and footprint, with Business Desktops being so cheap, I would go this route.

Would this be a good setup for Retro Pi. Can retro pi and Pi hole work together on 1 device?
Thanks
Yes it works perfectly fine. I have it also running Home Assistant for my internet-of-things (e.g. smart plugs, smart thermostats, etc).

PI Zero W kit on Amazon. $28. Runs great with pi-hole.
For some reason the pi-hole install enables pi zero W's WIFI chip's power saving mode. When it sleeps, it kills your internet connection. Need to disable.

I have not encountered that issue. Set mine up weeks ago and it has been solid.

It only happens occasionally to me overnight when the chip gets idle.

You can verify the chip's current power saving mode by:

journalctl | grep brcmfmac

Because you can't get a desktop anywhere close to these prices (i know, I looked) that has the features of the pi, hell you can't even get a diskless nas that works as well as this for anywhere near the price. If you don't need windows then this is a much better deal.
