Then you are actually missing out on the best picture quality and lossless sound experience.
If only iTunes (and the other streaming providers) would actually stream movies at the same (or better) bit rate as physical media. But they don't. So I keep buying physical media. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that this set comes with a digital code included. But when I want the best presentation I can obtain for a particular movie, physical media is almost always it.
The studio is likely looking to hit a specific sale number on the previously released sets before announcing it and setting a date. Would not surprise me to see it pushed back to the Fall.

What's the best player to use?

I've compared Sony(x800,x700),LG, Xbox X, Panasonic(820,420)…. Hands down either Panasonic were the best in every aspect.

Only big difference between the 820 & 420 Is DV.

So if budget is an issue, IMO the 420 is easily the best pick. I easily would give up DV for the other benefits.
I actually did that for our living room 😁

This contains ads each time you turn it on. So each time you turn off the movie you have 3 ads that you have to skip through. The home button is blocked from use. This is unacceptable on movies you pay for.

You're not understanding what I said. You buy upscaled 2k discs now marketed as 4k. We'll be buying upscaled 4k discs marketed as 8k in 10 years.
Movies made before 2000 were generally shot on film stock that has a higher effective resolution than 4k, but lower than 8k. There's no reason to think Hollywood will start rendering effects in 4k instead of 2k when most people don't even notice. And if they did, they'd release 4k discs in true 4k because there just isn't room in the market for a 4th movie disc format. Check out the sales figures on physical media; 480p DVD's are still over 50% of sales. We're 15 years into BluRay and it still hasn't overtaken DVDs, with 4k discs only around 10% of sales. There just isn't enough of a market for 8k discs, and nobody will see a difference in quality anyway.

What benefits does the 420 have over the 820 (aside from being cheaper)?

I'm guessing you mean the other way around? If not, price is the only advantage the 420 has over the 820.

Will the storyline be any different from the BRay edition?

Yes it's choose your own adventure. I chose the one where (spoiler alert) Cedrick Diggory comes back from the dead and uses floo powder to apparate to Mount Doom where he gets killed by Smeagol. It didn't change the outcome but made the extended version a way extended version. YMMV.

Who would down vote this? Someone who works for ad agency? Ads before a movie you purchased that you can't skip is nonsense.

I say watch theatrical first. If you like then watch extended. I found that 1 and 2 were good with extended but the 3rd dragged which I think is long enough with the theatrical version. I don't think the extra scenes in the 3rd added much to the experience.

The physical quality of these is atrocious. I've gone through 3 of them... Each time at least 1 disc came with a crack on the outer edge which rendered the disc unreadable.

You'd be right if it was feasible for 8K displays to catch on. But it just absolutely isn't unless some other upgrade (like HDR or Atmos) is packaged with it. It's physically impossible to see a difference at anything above 4K unless your display is larger than 100" or you are sitting closer than 6 feet from it. We are not running into technological limitations, but limitations from room layouts. Even if 100" displays were more affordable, you're really needing a dedicated "man cave" environment for it.

On my 65" (which is about as large a TV as anyone else has that I personally know) 4K itself was no big deal compared to HD. HDR and Atmos were a much bigger upgrade.

Not if Ras-al-ghul uses Kryptonite on Batman.
