"Stop Making Sense is Jonathan Demme's remarkable concert film that captures the enormous energy of the Talking Heads live performance. Band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison are joined by Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt in this concert film that is packed with the Talking Heads most memorable songs. Wall-to-wall music, beautiful cinematography and the legendary "Big Suit" make this "one of the greatest rock movies ever made"

Nice find. Strangely, also free to watch with Prime here

One of the great concert movies
I re-watched this on Amazon Prime last Winter after my first time seeing it in a theater in 1984 or 85 I think. And I had already seen them live a few times.

But I was amazed at how well the movie was done, not a lot of random scene changes; but a careful focus on aspects of the performance and staging (and the big suit). I'd forgotten how amazing David Byrne was in the physical aspects of the show, not just "dancing around" but honestly performance art. And of course integrated with the music.

There was so much that had never been done before -- probably because it didn't occur to anyone to do them. That was made them special.

After watching this (a fantastic film), follow it up by watching Test Pattern: Final Transmission on Documentary Now! Then watch Stop Making Sense again to make sure that you didn't miss anything during Final Transmission....

So great! My daughter loves it. When she was 3 she would build a stage by the coffee table and dance and sing along. She wanted more than anything to meet Tina.

But did you notice how the continuity was all over the place? Because they filmed across three shows to get different coverage, but didn't enforce a dress code, on some songs Byrne's hair is tousled and Weymouth is wearing a gray outfit and others his hair is gelled back and she's wearing a blue outfit with tights and arm wraps and Franz's polo shirt changes. But because the music and performances are so good, you don't really register the changes.

Metallica's Through The Never concert film was similarly shot over several nights, but stuck to the same clothes and guitars per song. You can tell it's pieced together from different nights because there will be a closeup of Lars on the drums, then in wide shots there's no cameraman nearby.

Taylor Swift's Reputation Tour show on Netflix does the same; there are closeups of her clearly playing to a Steadicam in front of her, then wide shots have no one there.

Hamilton on Mouse+ really pushes it with two live performances augmented by a third session where they shot the close-ups and reverse angles which would've required cameras on stage which no one paid $1000 to scalpers for tix was going to put up with.

If you're wondering why this was so good, it's because it was directed by Jonathan Demme... The same guy who directed Silence of the Lambs.

Terrific movie. Saw it when it came out, walking in as someone who knew perhaps two songs ("Once In A Lifetime" and "Burning Down The House") and leaving as someone wanting to hear more. I saw some dumb rock critic pan the soundtrack album, saying that the live versions were inferior to the studio versions. BZZZZZTTT!!! WRONG!!!! With the exception of the keyboard breakdown on "Burning Down The House", every live version SMOKES the originals with much better dynamics and energy.

They reissued the soundtrack with ALL 16 of the movie's songs some time back, vastly improving on the original release's 9-song track listing which shuffled the order around, edited down run times on the LP, and ditched the three songs that introduced the rest of the band after David Byrne's solo acoustic "Psycho Killer" - "Heaven" adding Tina Weymouth; "Thank You For Sending Me An Angel" adding Chris Franz; "Found A Job" adding Jerry Harrison - which denies listeners the buildup until the entire 9-piece band is engaged for the raucous "Burning Down The House."

If this was on Vudu or iTunes, I'd be all over it; but Amazon makes it a sad pass.

David Byrne is a national treasure. $9.99 on iTunes, wish they would match.

There's never been anything like it. It was so bizarre to see it when it first came out, everyone in the theater getting up and dancing, young and old. We went back and saw it several times, and it stayed in theaters in our town for a long time, since so many people were going back to see it, and dance to it over and over again.
