May I ask what's wrong with Polk S15s? I own both Sony Core and S15s. The Polks are very well made. I found them to be the best VFM. Sound wise too, they outperform the Sonys in every department. Not sure why they are in your blacklist!

I agree with you that the build quality is excellent for its price range and it even has magnetic grills which the Infinity's don't have. I really tried to like these. But I also have to agree with cheapaudioman's take on the s15's.

https://youtu.be/SSi8ipTyQi8?t=285

The bass was too boomy, undefined, mids and treble sounded veiled like I put a blanket over the rest of the speaker. Using it in a nearfield setup, the sound was worse at low volumes but I would need to crank it (LOUD) for it to sound decent, it got a lot better and mainly with house/trance music.

When I listened to the Sony Cores after, I noticed right away, the clarity in the mids, the tight, fast bass and the treble. Like a blanket was lifted off the speaker and it sounded good to me even at low volume.

That was my take but to each his own, I'm glad it worked out for you.worshipyummyWave

Were you using the s15 with a sub? I'm using it with one and love it in my office on speaker stands 4 ft from listener

What speaker stand would people recommend for these, sitting next to a Ikea Kalax and a record player between them.

I think I like the S15s because the treble is not pronounced as in most speakers. Being a silk/terelyne dome tweeter, its just smooth and refined. We can always make it pronounced using the eq though. The bass is probably because of the bass port that Polk incorporates. It wasn't boomy for me (could be due to the placement). One thing I can surely say is that the S15s overall clarity is higher. I actually use them as front mains + surrounds. I hear every detail whether its music or movie. I am saying this after directly comparing them with other good ones like Elac B6.2, JBL 530s.

Infact, most people who owned the S15s disagreed with cheapaudioman's views. If we read the comments, none had issues with the Polks! They liked them a lot just like me. Same is the case with the reviews they are getting online everywhere. May be its just personal likes!!

I have some huge, 40+ pound floorstanding speakers in my main room, they still greatly benefit from a sub, especially for movie content.

If I could do it all over again, I'd buy better bookshelf speakers and two subs. This is what I learned from my garage system as the bookshelf speakers with 5.25 inch woofers generally blend well with a 12 inch sub in-room.

So my suggestion: for the price of the floorstanding speakers anyone is looking at, spend it on bookshelf speakers, speaker stands, and a sub instead.
What's a good speaker stand for these? They seem a bit wider than some I saw, ~8" vs ~6" stands.

I bought the 550p sub along with this. Was that a mistake, I started reading reviews and they weren't amazing. I thought it would integrate better being the same brand and line but that doesn't look like the consensus online.

Find some wooden stools. It looks better and is more sturdier than any stands.

It has been asked and answered, but they're big. And I would think that they're not the best for nearfield listening, but if you just play music on your computer and walk away, it should be good.

A nice and pretty pair would be the https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=12281 if they put them at the right height for your listening position. If you want to spend a bit more, there's the monolith series of the same brand, they're nicer but considerably more expensive. The overhang is not an issue unless they are unstable when placed on top.

Looks better is subjective, but sturdy is spot on. As long as the stool pan is small enough and the speaker placed forward so that there aren't some weird reflections going on, then it's the budget choice.

If you want to avoid a sub, you want to spend more on floorstanding speakers instead of bookshelves.
If you want to avoid a sub, you simply add it later. ;-)

These are good enough for majority of the people.
