Been waiting for the 35mm 1.4 GM to get an EDU discount. I know it's a new lens but any idea how long it typically takes to join the party? The 14mm 1.8 GM is even newer and that one's already got an EDU discount of 10%.
Try Green Toe (sorry, url blocked) . I put in $1200 as my offer-amount for the 35mm 1.4 GM and it was accepted in a couple of hours. That's total amount, including tax and shipping, so about $350-400 off what I'd pay elsewhere online. Lens was delivered the next week from an authorized dealer (who I'm not supposed to disclose per their TOS). I haven't had a chance to look at the lens yet as I had it shipped to my parents' house in the midwest, where I'll be visiting next week.
A bad lens at a good price is still a bad buy. Obviously, if you don't need fast AF or f1.8, that equation can change.
But for the vast majority of shooters, I wouldn't recommend that 50mm for any price, period. An out of focus shot is useless, and moments are fleeting.
Super "casual" stuff means nothing. Are pictures of a child or a cat casual? I'd say so. Yet they're the most demanding for AF purposes and this lens is terrible for those. Yet "Formal" shots often of stationary adults don't need great af, and usually don't need terribly shallow dof either. If anything, this is a good lens for more formal occasions with multiple immobile adults, or maybe for still life street photography. Even then, there's better options.
Casual versus formal means about nothing. Neither does "real" glass. There's cheap glass that is great, and this isn't one. The 50mm is just not very good for most applications.

I don't care to go through my library to find shots specifically with this lens, but I can tell you it's far from being as terrible as everyone makes it out to be. In fact DXO rates it higher than Canon's and Nikon's counterparts. Yes CA is apparent in high contrast areas, but then again, I'm not shooting for high end prints with this lens. With that said, I've gotten some very nice shots with it and I don't regret the $200 I spent on it at all.
Would it be my first choice when reaching in my bag? No. Would I pick it over the kit lens or some third party lenses? Absolutely.

Whatever floats your boat. Dxo ratings are pretty useless imo. I'd rather spend slightly more and have a much better lens than a "not horrible" lens for slightly less. Lens' hold their value so the actual $ on the line is minimal. Makes little sense to cheap out when you can get a substantially better lens for not much more. If you're getting a full frame camera I think you can manage $300 instead of $200 on your 50mm prime lens.
Man people sure love to hate on the Sony's nifty-fifty...but at that price it's a great little lens for super casual stuff. I bring it when I just don't have it in me to bring my "real" glass.
The FE 50/1.8 is pretty good aside from the AF, especially at this price, but it's hard to recommend with the Samyang 45mm f/1.8 existing. It's not much more used or on sale. Autofocus and image quality are top notch.

Exactly what I was going to say. Sammy 24/35/45/75 f1.8 unbeatable for price/perf.
The 50mm f1.8 has perfectly fine auto focus, you just have to use continuous autofocus and not single shot auto focus. Why are there so many people willing to post complete nonsense? Stop repeating random stuff you hear with out actually looking into it yourselves you tard sheep.
Also it has way better quality control than the samyang lenses, which are great but 1 out of 3 comes out of their factory poorly assembled with tilted elements.
If interested in a cheaper zoom lens look into the tamron 17-28 2.8.I
I own the tamron 75-28mm 2.8 on my sony A6000. I was thinking about getting a faster lens since I have a newborn and love taking portrait / bokeh shots. I was looking at the 85mm 1.8 to pair with the tamron 75-28. Thoughts?
Im not able to find the sony 85mm 1.8 for 488$ as mentioned even though after signing in with my student id. Its still showing as 538$ even after adding to cart
