I have this at home and it is my favorite way to sharpen. Just keep in mind that this is not a guided system. It takes learning, finesse, and a steady hand. It produces an unquestionably top notch edge in the right hands. In the wrong hands, it will absolutely destroy the look/tip your knife in the blink of an eye. I don't think is has an equal on the market. Plan to start with knives you don't mind damaging. Guided systems all have their own limitations as do stones. Not all knives are designed with sharpening in mind. This compensates for the deficiencies in a guided system. I have sharpened axes, swords, machetes, lawn mower blades, and several hundred knives with the one I have at home. I've even reshaped blades from saber grind to full convex. Belt variety is limited, but most of what you could want is available, not always through work sharp. The deflection of the belt makes the sharpener inappropriate for a true scandi grind but is capable of so called scandivex.
You also need to be wary of edge and tip heating, especially on thin knives. Since you operate the sharpener with two hands on the knife, there is no reason not to notice any heat. Rated duty cycle is one hour on, one hour off.

I would guess that they got unexpectedly bombarded with orders for this. I selected same day shipping because they offered it, but amazon couldn't deliver. I bought the complete kit and they delivered the main unit and the belts, but not this attachment. I assume they flew some in overnight because I'm getting a very rare morning delivery from Amazon today.
They should have kept the promotions separate; 10% back on the amazon cc or the $20 discount on the attachment, not both. Both promos netted a ~33 percent discount on the attachment and nobody even remotely interested is going to pass on that, including people (myself included) looking to pick up base unit as well, especially given the with the 10% back on the main unit too, that gets you to about 20 percent off the entire system.
This is just an attachment to the Worksharp Ken Onion Edition. You can buy the sharpener and this attachment in a bundle but you obviously won't be getting the deal price. As for the attachment itself, it offers more versatility for custom angles and edges. The stock attachment is very limited—hard to sharpen items such as lawnmower blades, axes, and specialty blades.
From others on product Q&A page:
"This attachment is MUCH better than the stock attachment, especially if you are sharpening a knife such as a Chef's knife. The stock attachment tends to grind away more material at the first part when you start the pass. On a chef's knife, this creates a concave section at the bolster which is a very important section on a chef's knife. if you're trying to dice things like mint, onions, basil, etc., this raised area will not cut and on a chef's knife, that is a real pain in the butt. This attachment has worked well for me sharpening chef's knifes and any other blade."
"This Blade Grinding Attachment have many good attributes: have the ability of complete angle customization and the ability of adjusting an edge profile. This Attachment don't just a sharpener, but a very good blade grinder, especially for the convex edge. I like it."
Thanks for breaking this down for me! I'm pretty terrible at sharpening my knives, I use a dremel with guide to do things like axes and lawnmower blades with "ok" results.
I ended up going with the Work Sharp WSSAKO81112 Blade Grinder Attachment with Assorted Belt Kit for $75.43. It came with the 5 belts as well, and it'll be nice to have the extras on hand.
Can't wait to sharpen my mower blades with this attachment. I did it with the standard setup, and it was a bit awkward at best.
Thanks OP!
The Assorted Belt Kit are for the standard Ken Onion Work Sharp and not the Blade Grinder Attachment. I am not sure why they package it this way.
Well, I got a chance to use the attachment. Even though the standard attachment works great, it's a giant improvement. For me, it was easier and faster. Normally, for the standard attachment I would have to mask off all but the blade edge because the sides of the blades would get visible scratches from rubbing fine metal dust in the blade guide. With this, masking off the blade is unnecessary because only the blade edge makes contact with any part of the tool.
I also like the fact that the belts are wider and longer. They will last a bit longer but are a standard size and replacements will not be expensive.
I sharpened all my kitchen knives and also a small pocket knife. Let's just say I've got some odd bald patches on my forearm. I'm sure you can guess why.
This thing is very well designed. The adjustments are simple and clearly marked and belt changes are super easy too. Excellent product - I'm very happy.

Yes, imagine my surprise when I received it. Oh well, I was using the original set to do my lawn mower blades, so it will be good to have a food-related set and a non-food-related set.
