You're not correct here. Zen 3 has mainly improved in single threaded performance due to nearly 20% increased IPC but the Multi-threaded performance improvements, especially where the applications can tax all the cores, the improvement is less than 10%.
In any multi-threaded workloads, whether Video Encoding or editing, huge code compilation, Ryzen 9 3900X will be significantly faster than 5800X. I'm not sure from where you came up with that 10% slower only number.
Check the below comparison from AnandTech which will give you a better idea:

5800x is superior in gaming, I have both processors and it was a noticeable bump in performance from 3900x, Higher clocks + higher IPC = win
If you need the extra cores for things like video editing, this would serve you well, but for gaming and such I think a newer 5800x would probably do better.

This was the normal price back last year with the slick deal being under $400. Overall it's not a bad price considering availability.

Old tech for higher prices due to the shortage specific and targeted only to the USA, good ole economic warzone I think it's quite apparent that our country are not the best consumers.

Even though it's some 10+% slower, the $399 5800x on Amazon, might be a better buy

I agree. It's $379.99 at Micro Center these days as well. Better CPU for most use cases.

I play a lot of games and I have the 6800 AMD GPU and 5900x CPU. The CPU is never the bottleneck, I can probably game on a 3600 AMD CPU and the GPU will still be the bottleneck. Or course this is a different story if one were to be gaming on 1080p, though gamers are moving towards 1440p since that's the sweet spot.

The 3900x will be an excellent CPU and you won't see any bottlenecks when gaming at higher resolutions.

The price hasn't dropped that much. Usually, AMD's CPU are 30-60% off on their 2nd year.

Darn it, I just picked up a Ryzen 9 3900X from Adorama two weeks ago for $499. The 3900X was sold out everywhere for months. Adorama ran out before the next morning when I bought mine at 1 AM.

Bottom line, buy the 3900X while you can! It's a BEAST and worth every penny!

Also, most people will say that you need an X470 or higher motherboard to run this chip. That is not true. It's running perfectly for me on my ASUS Crosshair VI X370 board. However, you need to check the specs of your mobo and make sure that the X3900 is listed for support.

So, there's a good chance you do not need to update your mobo if you have a first-gen Ryzen board like me. I replaced a 2700X, and it's a massive difference in performance!
