the majority of performance improvements were experienced when moving from hdd to sata ssd's. going from a premium sata ssd to a premium nvme ssd had almost ZERO benefit for me.

get something that's cool and has a good warranty and reputation. you should be fine.
Reviews state this runs pretty hot. If using in laptop, it could be concerning while Hynix is actually super efficient so works great on laptops.
For anyone on the fence and comparing against the WD Blue SN550 NVME, this drive outperforms the SN550 in all/most tests. Against the SK Hynix P31, the SK Hynix drive does a little to a lot better for $12 more dollars.

Can't decide between the Crucial P5 ($96) or the SK Hynix Gold P31 ($108). Been waiting for the deal with SK Hynix but this one seems better. Thoughts?

Performance seems close giving P31 the edge but I probably won't notice a difference. This will be going into my PC which has a built in M.2 heatsink. The efficiency and heat seems to be the selling point for the P31 but is it worth the difference? Maybe for longevity?

Sold on the SK Hynix. Returning the Sandisk Ultra M.2 from Bestbuy deal a week ago. Glad I waited!

edit: Looks like P5 is Lightning Deal now plus another $5 Prime discount and $15 Chase discount for total of $35 after tax cheaper. Still worth the difference?

I think the fact the P5 got cheaper makes it even harder to justify the difference to the SK Hynix. I used to chase every fraction of performance and was happy paying more for it.

Nowadays, the performance of premium hardware is fast enough that I don't think I'll mind if a game starts in 9 seconds instead of 8 on NVME! Especially if it used to start in 22 seconds on SATA SSD or 45 seconds on SATA HDD...

i was trying to argue that even a 'budget' nvme drive will probably be sufficient in performance compared to a high end nvme drive for normal use.

I have been using the P1, not this P5, for awhile on 2 builds and while the performance is good with the help of its turbo cache option, both had issues, either firmware or windows driver. If the windows driver does not update correctly, you'll need to make sure you have a saved restore point or else windows would not boot. On the positive side, comparing the P1 (gen3) to my 980 pro (gen4), within windows and gaming, it's hard to tell there are any performance gain. I think the Samsung shaves a few seconds in the game loading.
