2 years ago I was shucking 8TB drives for this price…$130 for 4TB is hard to swallow right now

Agreed. I returned a Toshiba X300 because I thought it was too loud, and then I got this and realized I had no idea what loud was. It doesn't exactly sound like it's breaking or anything's wrong with the drive, but it's LOUD.

Nah - someone thought the GPU proof of work craziness had run it's course, so thought up of a way to create cryptocurrency using spare capacity on our hard drives. Next it'll be free space in our RAM, then bandwidth on our home networks, then unused icons on our desktops...

Also chia is using ram disks to plot so could affect ram prices maybe
