Maybe I'm missing the point, but why would you buy a Max-Q 3080 laptop? You go for the 3080 to get performance, but lose a lot of it on a lower wattage variant?

This is more aimed as a creator laptop that can game, not a full gaming laptop. Even though it is totally capable of gaming. So the lower wattage is for over all lower heat and better battery life when a content creator or editor needs the battery life while on dedicated gpu.
Yes most of the time it will be plugged in but it is about flexibility. I wouldn't trust a full 3080 in this chassis btw. I have owned 2 previous years models and it took a full liquid metal repaste and swapping out thermal pads to get the gpu and cpu to stay around 80c with fans mid. edit: while gaming. I don't do media work.

Some people like the lower wattage card so it can run quieter, for example a 100 watt 3080 will run as fast as a 125 watt 3070, but will do so with less power and noise. It gives people flexibility on how they want to run their machine. It's a valid strategy in my opinion.

I hadn't considered the creator angle. Thanks

I can understand less noise/less heat, but that's a significant premium.
i remember buying a windows laptop almost 15 yrs ago with similar price. now u can buy a lite $150 laptop and decently can process or do the same thing for work like ms project, spreadsheet etc
Don't forget that Max-Q cards also have many variations in performance due to the TDP set by the manufacturer.. Which nearly all of them don't establish! 70 vs 90 watts is a huge difference in final performance spec.
Sometimes the wattage difference is so large that a lower end card will perform similarly or even higher than a higher end card that's castrated by a lower wattage ceiling. The Quadro RTX 3000 mobile, for example, is almost the same as RTX 4000 Max Q at lowest ceiling (ie: save the $750 upgrade fee lol)
Dave2D talks about this on his channel and has a running Google sheet listing differences.

Even for a creator I think it is a lot more expensive than is necessary.
