Good luck to everyone in the north west
Damn you sliding window.
Was searching for something in stock locally and after nothing was available looked for the fastest delivery from Lowe's, Home depot, Amazon and Walmart, Found these highly rated units that were even matching previous low prices. Thought save fellow SDers a couple of hours of comparison, review and shipping date research.

Amazon has these in stock now.

Better design and energy efficient.

You can open/close the windows with the unit installed, and is also a lot quieter since the outside half is separated.

A week ago I was able to get the 12k unit for $409. It went on an unannounced sale momentarily. Keep an eye on it. Most of the time they seem to be out of stock.

I don't understand why support for people with homes that have sliding windows is so poor. I rarely see vertical window ACs, and if I do, it's 2x-3x the price of a standard window ac, though the vast majority of homes I've lived and visited in seem to have these windows.

Maybe it's geographical, but it's ridiculous that manufacturers can't seem to be bothered to design more vertical window acs, relegating people in my situation to use a terribly inefficient portable ac instead. Ugh
I am also very puzzled. Sliding windows are very popular because they are cheaper. The so called vertical A/C are really just a little taller A/C. They aren't really much different than horizontal A/Cs besides the included covering accessories. And AFAIK, don't really solve any problem caused by horizontal A/Cs.

I would like to see some sort of secondary window that can be installed on a horizontal A/C that allows the window to be opened. Or a mini-split A/C with a front end that can be installed vertically.

Second this. I installed a regular window AC in one room and a Midea/Danby U shaped one in another room (both sliding windows).

The Midea U shaped one is way better and the 12k BTU Midea unit is about the same size the as the 8k BTU Midea unit and only uses 475 W on high fan mode.

The regular AC one uses around 600-700W and sounds like a blower while the Midea sounds like a room fan. In fact sometimes I don't even know the U shaped ones are even on. It's like a minisplit for Windows.

If you don't want to build a frame, just get the Soleus window frame kit and it works with the Midea/Danby U shaped units. Switching out the regular AC in the other room with another Midea/Danby.

I bought similar Frigidaires some 7-8 years ago, the 8,000 for an outbuilding & the 12,000 for a mother-in-law suite. They have been good units, and this seems like a pretty good price these days, although not a steal by any stretch. Repped, OP.

+10 you gave a price analysis, review and shown a peel of your generosity all in one post.

Bought one of these from Walmart a few months back and it arrived broken. Also, styrofoam inside was all shattered all through it and the fan never turned on to blow any air. The compressor would kick on for about 15 seconds at a time and turn back off.

Most microwaves come from the same factory
We found evidence that most countertop microwaves sold in the US are manufactured by just one company, Midea. We confirmed with Midea that it makes and sells Toshiba, urlhasbeenblocked, and Black+Decker ovens. We're also confident that GE, Whirlpool, Sharp, Breville, Insignia, Magic Chef, Hamilton Beach, and others also sell microwaves that were originally built and probably designed in large part by Midea, though all parties that we contacted declined to comment.

Is it really that different? I understand it's a bit less stable, but that's what's going to happen even with "vertical" window ACs, right? Unless somehow the ac unit is the same height as the sliding window, you still have to find a way to fill that gap above it. So just get a piece of plexiglass and 2x4s to brace it all. It'll probably be cheaper than putting it in a single-hung window with the brace that the a/c manufacturer sells separately.

Here's a link I found for one way to do it: https://www.instructables.com/Mounting-a-Standard-Air-Conditioner-in-a-Sliding-W/#:~:text=Mounting%2... [instructables.com]

The 8000 BTU one was giving me that error. Other two werent. I called them and made them submit a ticket. The next day I was able to order. I am not sure if that had anything to do with it or it just dies it when low in stock.

Try again.

I am in MA btw.

I just bought one at Sam's for $299 12kBTU

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/a/prod22830073.ip

It works amazing! It cools my living room, dining room and kitchen. I have an old house with nothing but window units.

There are ways to install in sliding windows... as long as your window is wide enough to fit the unit... Takes a little more work, but youtube has always been my friend for this stuff.

Based on my experience with my RV I'm assuming you could get away with a 2000 watt gen. 13.5.k is over the limit but 8-10k may be fine.
