The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz Eight-Core AM4 Processor is a powerful eight-core processor with 16 threads, designed for socket AM4 motherboards. Built with Zen 2 architecture, the third-generation 7nm Ryzen processor offers increased performance compared to its predecessor. It has a base clock speed of 3.6 GHz and can reach a max boost clock speed of 4.4 GHz. Moreover, it features 32MB of L3 cache, 24 PCIe Gen 4 lanes, and support for dual-channel 3200 MHz DDR4 RAM. Users should pair it with an AMD X500-series motherboard to fully take advantage of PCIe 4.0. This processor has a 65W TDP (Thermal Design Power) and includes a Wraith Prism cooler with RGB LED lighting. Please note that it does not have an integrated GPU, so a dedicated graphics card is required.

Not bad considering this comes with a wraith prism fan that's not bad tbh. I would probably choose this over the 5600x atm. Extra 2 cores will probably age a bit better.

$130 more, or a roughly 50% higher price isn't exactly a little more to jump to the 5000 series. The 3000 series is a great option if someone has a budget but doesn't want to sacrifice performance or core count.
Back to the same price exactly one year later
For productivity and multi tasking, the 3700x > 5600, and 3900 > 5800. If you game, then yeah go 5 series. But that's not everyone.

Ryzen 5 3600 was $150 last year. Thanks for a pandemic.

I'd pick the 5600x for $10 more over this. There are many things that don't take advantage of more cores, so having the vastly superior single threaded performance is of the newer chip is better overall imo..

Unless I was upgrading just the cpu, I wouldn't build a new AM4 based system right when AM5 is right around the corner. If I needed a new pc on a budget, I'd go with the i5-11400(for <$190 when it's back in stock) to hold me over under the next gen ddr5 based stuff comes out. No sense in "investing" in deprecated tech imo.

The problem is the 5600x is only $30 more and is notably faster single core. To the point where even multicore performance isn't far off.

I wanted the 5600x but I couldn't pass the value proposition of a slightly used 3700X for $170 locally. It's basically what I paid for my 2700x a year and a half ago. Now I'll get the 5000 when it drops significantly as well. I'll likely hold onto the 5000for a while to let DDR5 mature, before making a steep investment.

Good choice. I got a 3600 XT for $125 and I'm totally satisfied

At this price the 10850K (10 cores/20 threads) is a better deal, currently $320 at Micro Center. They also sell them open-box for $270-280 when they're available.

Our research indicates that this offer is $10 lower (3% savings) than the next best available price from a reputable merchant with prices starting from $279.99.

Why is this FP? I got this a year ago for $260 which also included AC Valhalla...Love how AMD is turning around doing exactly what Intel was doing prior years lol

There's trade offs to both, it's definitely a big difference in the way apps and games scale in the future though.

This reminds me of those old days of i5 i2500k vs the i2700k. Sure there were minimal gains at the time but as time went on the i2700k had way more life in it due to the cores.

Same happened with the 7600k vs the 7700k.

EDIT: Forgot to mention the new consoles PS5 and XSX use AMD nodes with 8 cores and 16 threads, I'm not an expert on coding but I would think this would make a big differences in games.

5600x is good since it does support pci 4.0 and Memory rebar if im correct. So there's trade offs.
3700x supports pcie gen 4.0 and rebar aswell

not everyone lives near a microcenter is the issue here... also, if you want to take full advantage of that unlocked cpu, you have to get a z490/590, whereas a 3700x will overclock fine on any half decent b450/550

Also "right around the corner" is PCIe 5.0 and DDR 5. The ram will cost a lot and the new CPUs, RAM and mobos will have "issues" like all new platforms out of the box. The seasoned enthusiasts know not to rush out to be an AM5 early adopter. As the old saying goes "its the pioneers who take the arrows." I think its ok to get a well seasoned AM3 platform that's at peak vs a new platform with inevitable bugs and at a higher cost.

From most 5800X and 5600X multi-core comparisons I've read that's not always the case.
The 5 series has better architecture and faster core that can do more than just make up the core difference
I was watching JayzTwoCents on Youtube and he said every new issue of AM4 cpus has had less bugs and smoother operation. He mentioned random electrical crashes that could plague the first iterations. We know the first Ryzens had all that Samsung "b-die" mayhem going on with ram. AMD mobos weren't exactly state of the art since mobo makers were always Intel centric. I was going to upgrade my 2700x with a 3900x but now I think its wiser to just go with a 5000. Like Jay, I've had the radom mystery crashes npw and then and I would like to avoid those. I think losing the "crease" with the infinty fabric has to help

Ended up going with Ryzen 5 5600x for my son's build. That's better too right?

For gaming 5600x is great. For more intensive things like photo / video editing or streaming etc., I'd go one generation back with more cores.
