About the "prolong the life of your phone" thing... I have an OG Pixel XL and it is still working well. No more updates but it is still working well. You're implying once you don't get android updates, your device would be bricked /useless which is not the case.

EDIT I think I figured it out. I don't think I'll ever need this feature anyway bit it looks like lineageos has the "do not validate" option

Looks like from the link shared down the thread that this will become more and more common with all Android phones. The issue is the insecure enterprise networks requiring users to select "do not validate certificates".
So it makes sense that Google is watching out for this. When people gripe enough, they will update their security and it is just sad that Pixels are the first to roll it out and it won't put enough pressure on them until it becomes the norm for more Android phones.
