High merv filters in your AC are garbage. Your AC isn't an air purifier. You're restricting your airflow and trashing your AC in the process.
very limited and unusual sizes:

10x20x1
12x20x1
12x30x1
14x14x1
14x18x1
25x25x1
Modern blowers are designed to handle higher Merv filters. With deeper/multiple pleated filters, the restriction is minimal and no problem.

Check your HVAC system, it should state what type of filters it's designed to handle.

Yep. MERV 7 or 8 max. I don't get why people think their air handler should be filtering pollen. It's there to keep the blower and evaporator clean and that's about it.

Merv 8 should be suffice for most homes. Replace every 2 months. Unless you run the AC for 75% of the time for that month. Unless you are 💯 germaphobic go with a higher Merv but that will make your furnace run harder.

this is not correct. higher rated filters have a lot more surface area (From the extra pleats) which makes up for the filtering capacity. attached is actual data showing the difference is less than 5% airflow.

There was a study done by the state of California and they found thicker filters don't necessarily filter better or provide significantly less resistance, but they found the latest high flow MPR 1900 filters from filtrete provided some of the least resistance even after running it for awhile and it came down to the number of pleats. I'm not an expert here, but it countered the thought that lower MPR is always better for resistance and thicker filters always have less resistance.

Does the thickness matter? Looking for cheaper alternative for this -

it depends sometimes they retrofit a modern furnace into a janky setup.. and dont go the extra mile. pretty sure I'd freeze up the coils if I used merv 13 in my 16x25x1 setup.

For an extra 10min of work they could have made it accept the 4" wide ones..

Depends on the brand. Some brands don't have the extra pleats. Check out projectfarm's video on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkjRKIRva58

I always use the cheapest filters possible but my hvac guy said to use high merv filters because the cheap ones won't catch all the particles and the particles that get through will have an impact on the motor?

The vast majority of high filtration units are pleated.

Why is it spam?

Has that link been debunked somewhere? I figured it was done by the state of California, so it would be independently tested and reputable.

Other people are saying the same that filters with a higher number of pleats help to reduce the airflow restriction despite better filtration.
