Here's projector centrals review of it, it's an older projector (over 3 years old), but does have the slightly nicer .66" DLP chip (over .47"), and overall has good picture quality. You also qill be hard pressed to find a projector around $1k with lens shift, I believe the old Epson 5040 refurb deals were around this price but a lot of those units were defective too.

This definitely isnt really meant for gaming if you're thinking about that though with 60ms input lag. Very casual gamer, who plays no FPS type games wouldnt really care that much, but most other gamers who play a good bit or player twitchier type games will notice input lag that bad.

Decent deal but feels like the older Epson 4040 is better with 3 yr warranty refurb from epson:

I got my 5040ub refurbished for 1049 I believe a couple years ago. It's been great. Haven't seen that deal in awhile though.

Prolly wait. 60 ms lag is crazy high. I'm surprised they think they're going to get $1,049 for this paperweight.

At a $1K price point, both are good options if you're not looking to play games and don't care too much about HDR. Newer generation projectors have better HDR, but still not great. I went with the Epson 4040 (direct from Epson Clearance Center) and paired with a Panasonic UB420, which allows me to turn off HDR on UHD movies. I chose the Epson over the Optoma since it offers both vertical and horizontal lens shift vs. just vertical on the Optoma, no potential rainbow artifacts, powered zoom lens, lens memory, 3 year warranty. However, I think the Optoma will have better blacks and is also smaller and lighter, which may be important depending on your setup. Both projectors have similar zoom ranges, but as always, if you're looking at a projector, be sure to use the throw distance calculator on Projector Central.

Why do you say the optoma would have better blacks? From the review I linked I thought Epson 4040 had better color, contrast, etc.

I'm torn between 4040, 4100 and 5040ub if possible. Epson 3800 too loud. I thought uhd60 worse than all of these?

Optoma has had a fair number of issues, I'd probably recommend going for an Epson deal (or BenQ).

I'm actually disappointed in the contrast with the Epson 4040 as my older Optoma had better blacks, so more of an assumption on my part. If you can get a 5040ub at a reasonable price, it would be the best projector of the group. It's a bummer that Epson raised prices on the older refurbs, else I would have gone for the 5040ub. Only a 2 year warranty, but a better picture overall.

I tried that optima pixel shifting gaming projector. Was very disappointed. Everything was dim and washed out. No matter setting. Honestly i hope it was defective cuz i could never recommend that. I have the epson 3800 now and love it. Its bright and low lag. Colors really explode in a dark room. It may not be full 4k but i cant see pixels at all whereas on my older 1080p epson I could

Can anyone recommend a good screen to use with these recent projector deals? Prefer pull down but can be convinced to go motorized if that's better

I've always liked Elite Screens. Check them out and see what you think.

I've been looking at PJ for basement movies with gaming potential and just bought the Viewsonic PX-701 4K from Amazon for $675 (viewsonic refurbished). We'll see how it goes most reviews seem positive.
