After all said and done, my "discounted" ticket from SFO to Paris was over $1100.
And you have to stop in Lisboa, while other companies have direct flights to CDG. Not a good deal.
TAP never includes checked bag for their economy/basic and most people will want/need at least 1 check bag BOTH ways so youll have to pay for those 2 times.
cheapest i was able to get was $464 round trip with checked bag both ways. without it, it would be in the low-mid 300s.

That's the catch..... fares look good but by the time you add back what everyone would consider normal for such a trip - bags, choosing seats, etc, the fares are actually high. TAP now has the pricing structure of outfits like Frontier and Spirit - if you just want a seat on the plane and just wearing the clothes on your back, the fares are cheap. Everything after that is nickel and dime.
The "big" carriers are even following suit. My IL's asked me to look into tickets from NYC to ROM in September. Found deals on Delta, direct, for around $580 or so IIRC. Great I thought.... only to find out the fares were BE, which is basically no checked bags, no assigned seats, etc. Adding a checked bag for each (Europe for 2 weeks..... come on who the hell doesn't check a bag?) and the fare was closely approaching Main Cabin (which is ironically the same seats as BE, just with more "privileges"); plus, there are major change restrictions on BE fares, so I went with the MC fares for them which were more like $710/ea.

My wife and I have been VERY good about traveling abroad without check bags. We have to travel light and used a lot of low cost airlines in Europe BUT beware European airlines have strict weight limits, so beware you may be stopped to pay overweight feesā¦. Make sure you read all the T&Cs.
Be careful out there guys

If it wasn't for the fact that they are Star Alliance, I wouldn't end up on them by choice.

Was wondering about that. Never flown with them but anything I've heard from others seemed to always be negative or meh at best.
But i had a great experience with TAP. If you think its a good price, you cant go wrong with star alliance. Safe travel!
