I find it is not great for my back after about 12-15 minutes on a C2. Haven't had surgery, but have some disc desiccation and a couple small osteophytes. After a few months with rowing added in, I switched back to only free weights to work full body/the posterior chain and just keep the rep count down.

Definitely ask your orthopedics doctor, not just strangers on the internet, before pushing it!

concept 2 is incomparable. however if you cannot afford a concept 2, these are your best bet.

I have a Concept2 model c still running strong. It stands in its end when stored which doesn't take too much space. You can even hang clothes off of it when it's standing.

I'm going to look at a used C2 tomorrow. Anything I should check before handing them the cash? I've used rowing machines at the gym before but it's been years since then.
I'd row a few hundred meters on it and see how smooth it is. You can also check the monitor to see how many meters are on it (and the machine itself, assuming it's the orig monitor). Check for physical damage, etc. And I'm sure there's better advice from pros if you do a search. And make sure to check out the FB and other forums, youtube videos, and competitions, etc on the C2 website. Good luck!

Based on everyone's recommendations in this thread, I picked up a used Model D on FB for $650! I was comparing them for a while and glad I finally pulled the trigger…it only has 5,515 meters on it! Thanks everyone! Now it's time to get back into shape!
