How can you call it "old tech" when its replacement/upgrade is not even out yet?
Remember if you live in NYC area the Micro Center in Paterson NJ only charges 3.2% tax instead ofthe apporx 8.9 yet charged in NYC and Yonkers
Old tech? This is state of the art. Even the new 11th gen from Intel can't compete. If you think this is old tech, you should avoid giving computer advice.

Kind of wish I got 5800x at this price but I needed a processor and don't really need more than 6 cores for my use case. Also more money towards gpu. 8 core is supposely future proofing but next gen will be another big IPC increase.
i am trying to hold out till next spring..when the tech really bumps up...

I did a comparision, so my how is this better than the Ryzen 7 3700X 9 Core you get more bang for the buck.

Description CPU Mark Price CPU Value (CPU Mark / $Price) Notes
Ryzen 5 5600X Vermeer 6 Core 22,162.00 $259.99 $85.24 Wraith Stealth Cooler
Ryzen 7 5800X 8 Core 28,507.00 $359.99 $79.19 No Heatsink
Ryzen 7 3700X 9 Core 22,788.00 $239.99 $94.95 Wraith Prism Cooler

Dang that is a nice price .. A part of me kinda thinks I should have waited and went for this deal today vs the 5900x I grabbed months back .(and it was a pain to get the 5900x even at Micro Center )

I did the same. Wonder if we can sell out 5900x? I really wanted the 5800x but not for $450. I wanted it for $400. $360 is a no brainer.

Yeah, these prices are fine, but in 3 months Alder Lake 12th gen will launch and have better single thread and multithread performance, DDR5, PCIe 5, etc. Basically a next-gen CPU. Even if youre not interested in buying a better CPU because youre already on AM4, AMD WILL drop prices to compete because Zen 4 launches in 12 months, so price cuts is all AMD can do.

https://videocardz.com/newz/intel...tion-event

If youre not on AM4 already, Zen 3 is a dead end socket, as Zen4 is on AM5. Also LGA1700 (Intel 12th gen socket) is expected to last through 14th gen, meteor lake, Intel 4 node with tiles (chiplets), so youre 'investing' in a 3 year platform vs a deadend with AM4 or LGA1200.
spoken like a true Intel fanboy...

Intel changes RAM and sockets all the time. there is no such thing as a 3 year platform with Intel.

that chip will be a furnace at 200W...

I'll give Alder Lake the benefit of the doubt... Even though Intel has been lagging for awhile. Meanwhile, AMD is not standing still either...

I would like to hold out but I know not to buy a first generation of anything. A new socket with a new CPU is going to have some edges that need polishing off. Then you have DDR 5 which will cost a lot when new. Then PCIe 5.0 is coming up. I decided to skip all the 1st gen commotion and get something from the top of the AM4 heap.

I just got the 5800X. I was going to get a Asus X570 mobo but the Tuf on shelf had no USB-C. Then I Saw a Tuf 550 Plus for $170 - $150 with the $20 off. It has USB-C + 2.5 GB ethernet so I went with that. WIth all the crazy prices the last months a 5800X with ASUS USB-C mobo for $510 was pretty good. The AMD RX 580 gpu I bough 2 years ago for 210 was selling for $900 a few weeks ago - $750 used on ebay lol

It will take at least another 2 year for those to drop to the price of current "old" tech.
Yeap… he will wait for another year and then buys Ryzen 3 instead because the difference performance does not justify the extra cost yet. Go figure.

If you're on a tight budget, or you plan to upgrade in 3 or 4 years, get the R5 5600x. If you've got more budget or plan to upgrade in 5+ years, get the R7 5800x.

I can validate that. I was in Microcenter in Tustin, CA today. The price was between $1600 - $2100. They actually restocked 3070 & 3080 while I was there. But I didn't bother.
Wow $1600 for a 3070. I'm really glad I convinced my son to buy a prebuilt with a 2070 super before gpu prices started going crazy. It was right before 3080s were coming out. I think he spent 1600 on the entire system.

I watch Tech at "Tech Deals" on Youtube because he knows as much as other reviewers without shoveling hype. He said you could play 95% of games at 1080P with a Ryzen 2 2600 and Nvidia 1660 (which was under $200 last year). Steam shows about 14% of gamers have 2 cores; 39% of them have 4 cores; 32% of them have 6 cores; 14% have eight cores and only 1% of gamers have 12 cores

So 85% of PC gamers have 6 cores or less.

A Ryzen 5 2600 is still good. A caveat is that every generation of Ryzen has been more stable. I had no issue with a 2600 but I was sure to check AMD's memory vendor list to buy memory thy approved. But even now there have been a lot of bios updates on AMD chips and mobos.I would get a newer mobo and a 550 or X570 can handle a chip from 2/3000s as well as a 5000. Really, the hard part will be getting a gpu that's not stupid expensive

https://store.steampowered.com/hw.../?sort=pct

There is a new article out about the G-series processors with graphcs built-in. Maybe something like that helps until the prices come down
