Seems like few people seem to know, but these aren't for parents to advertise to all the other drivers to use caution around them, that would be annoying. They're for first responders to an accident scene. If a wreck is serious enough, it may not be easy to spot a car seat amongst the debris. These signs are to let them know that there may be a child in the car.

I will say, I've seen plenty of people driving with their kids and these signs in their car, and they drive like assholes.

Nope. I was much older then (about 15 - 17 years back) but saw this on the freeway more than once when the yellow stickers came out to be put onto the rear glass. After I saw 3 separate incidents, I asked all my co-workers whose car(s) I saw with them to remove them as it would not be safe if one of these loonies did that to them.
