Depends on the specific filter. 3M add more pleats which means more filter area.

The MERV 13 in the 3M brand has a lower pressure drop (air flow resistance) than their MERV 5, 7, 11, and 12.

3M MERV 5 - 0.23 pressure drop
3M MERV 7 - 0.24 pressure drop
3M MERV 11 - 0.23 pressure drop
3M MERV 12 - 0.22 pressure drop
3M MERV 13 - 0.19 pressure drop

It really depends on the HVAC system and what it's designed for. Lower end and older ones are typically not built to handle the higher MERV filters. Newer and better ones are built to handle it without issue, though. For example, my HVAC air handler has a sticker on it that specifically says:

I just had a new heater/ac system installed and the filters are 16X25x4. These aren't as easy to locate and affordable. The best option I have located was at Ace Hardware. Not every store stocks them & shipping to your home isn't available.

My local store didn't have any but when I went to the store to ask the staff looked into it & they can do a special order for you. However it also depends on their warehouse inventory also.

They're under $10 and merv 8 rated.

This is accurate. The higher the MERV, the harder your system has to work to pull the air through it
My unit came with a 4" lenox filter. If it was designed with a 4" filter what you gonna do?

This test on youtube is something to consider (hope your house is not as dusty): https://youtu.be/RkjRKIRva58

If any west coast people are looking to cut down on smoke for wildfires, I suggest getting a higher MERV value. Preferably 11 and over, many even say 13 is the minimum.

Building a filter cube will dramatically cut down on the static pressure put on the box fan, even with a high MERV filter. Check out this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw7fUMhNov8

I have this air purifier: https://www.amazon.com/AIRMEGA-Sm...B01C9RI96S

and am thinking if I cut a HEPA rated or HEPA equivalent air filter to the same size as this air filter that it uses: https://www.amazon.com/AIRMEGA-Pu...B01C9RIAE4

That I can just use that instead of buying the more expensive replacements. Thoughts?

This is interesting. So they've achieved increased filtration with less resistance. Thank you for this. I personally need to read up more thoroughly when choosing my next filter.
Here is a great website for "some" filter TESTING and filter static pressures. This guy does amazing reviews on a number of things, not related solely to HVAC systems. Worth it to watch the entire video!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkjRKIRva58
A couple of other notes I would like to throw in:
Nominal size vs. actual size. Many of these "so called" website retailers buy mass produced filters that are simply "re-branded" for the retailer , capitalizing on the lack of knowledge out there! Then, you often find that when the filter is placed, the actual size leaves gaps all the way around the filter resulting in dust accumulating in your cabinet, motor and air handler. But trying to find the "actual size" is frustrating! Somewhat like trying to find a "well trained" HVAC tech that does the "proper" servicing of a system. They are out there, just hard to find! There are ways that you can modify your filters for a "tight fit" to ensure that the filter is doing it's job properly.

Known brand filters are $3 at Home Depot. Why go for these no-name ones that could easily be poor quality?

Iv'e switched to Honewell FC40R Return Grille Filter MERV 10
initial pressure drop of 0.12 in WC at 2 CFM per sq. inch.

4 inch filter that fits in a 1 inch return grille(pretty clever) and dont have to change every month Applause

Anyone know if this is good to put into a window?

I wanted to use it to filter the intake of my portable AC unit. Seems a little thick to fit in though.
