It isn't the greatest campaign compared to the old school sims IMO but if you're fiending for some Star Wars dog fights with a story, you could do a lot worse
Just remember it's in first person mode only and a joystick or HOTAS setup is recommended, although people have played with a gamepad or even mouse/kb
if you have a VR setup, this game is a must
Also for folks who haven't heard, a recent Total Conversion for X-Wing alliance was released that brings the entire Tie Fighter campaign into the X-Wing alliance engine with updated graphics and even some (beta) VR support

Not as new and flashy as Squadrons but many would argue it's a much deeper single player experience.
Wow, that Tie Fighter conversion looks AMAZING. Thank you Sir, you have won the internet today for introducing me to this masterpiece! Time to purchase a Thrustmaster HOTAS stick or find my old joystick and install this!!!

The VR is a cool experience. That being said, it was also the worst nausea I ever had in a VR game. It took a couple days to fully go away. If you have any motion sickness issues in VR, be conservative in how long you play at a time. This is the only steam game I've ever returned.
