Im curious, what is up with this flood of refurbed Dyson vacuums hitting the market lately? I thought Dyson was the gold standard when it comes to vacuums that aren't named Kirby?

To be honest I saw the v 10 version of this in Costco and it didn't feel like something that would last 2 years. Had a very plastic-y feel.

There's a reason Consumer Reports no longer recommends Dyson.

It's called marketing. They have always used very cheap plastics aince their first model. Margins are a beautiful thing! (if you are the company benefitting from them being high of course)

I've had a couple different ones over the years, and they were 'ok' to 'good'. Certainly not as great as the price premium suggests. They definitely are not made to last, and I am sure their marketing strategy and production/new model cycles have a lot to do with that.

I read the why, and it seems that battery issues are #1. I have a 5 year old v6 (which was refurb) and the battery is starting to go now but after 5 years I guess that is expected. Also it creaks and the plastic is not super durable. I would say that is about it's usable lifecycle.

Looking at the other issues, these a cyclone vacs so if you do not maintain them you are going to lose suction and potentially burn out the motor. For the roller brushes, you need to clean them every few months, and get hair out of them otherwise it can cause the rollers to stop. I checked out my MIL v7 which I gave her, and I literally spent 20 minutes going over filter cleaning, roller cleaning, not charging the battery up all the time, only use max if absolutely needed. So it's 3 years old, NEVER did squat to it. It took me two hours to dissemble it and clean it properly, I'm surprised it still worked.

Now I picked up a v11 (refurb) and it is much better engineered and way better than the v6/v7 with the newer torque brushes and auto power. The battery is new gen and is supposed to last 7+ years, but who knows.
I have cheapo Shark also (stick and reg vac), but I will say the parts are cheap for those, and they just work so I would say those are probably a better bet if you are not into regular maintenance. They clean just as good as the new v11, but the attachments are not as nice. I really like the new torque brush as I dont have to change it out from hardwood to low-pile carpets. On mid to high, I use proper vac.
