Yeah I would actually like to watch these old "pretend-serious" movies now again -- probably only saw two of them, and on little TVs. But, there's no way not to just keep thinking of Airplane!

The later Airplane movies made more tribute to Airport, like Sonny Bono buying a briefcase bomb at the airport store.

But the first Airplane! was almost entirely based on Zero Hour (B&W 1957).
Look it up, rent it, buy it. Worth it because now we can laugh at all the events in the original movie even though it was meant to be totally serious..

I saw Zero Hour on TCM a while back and it's shocking how similar it is.

Side-by-side comparison: Zero Hour! (1957) Vs Airplane! (1980)

https://youtu.be/8-v2BHNBVCs

"The film [Airplane!] is a parody of the disaster film genre—particularly the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!, from which it borrows the plot and central characters[7]—as well as many elements from Airport 1975 and other films in the Airport series."

Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) plays an air traffic controller in 'Airplane.'
