this is the phone u buy to use it as a trade in device. lets say at the end of the year tmobile got something like trade in XR for the iphone 13 or samsung S24 etc. currently Apple value XR a $240 trade in credit.
Anyone wanting to use Airtags should note that you can't use precision location with any iPhone X, XR, etc. Just wanted to mention it because I was surprised by this.I figured XRs would be good recent enough to use all of the features of Airtags. Has to be 11 or above.

I'm a little bit confused. If Apple will only give you a trade-in value of $240, and the phone costs the same, what is the value in buying this as a trade-in phone?
Sorry, I didn't mean I would trade it in to apple
This is to trade in to tmobile hoping they have a crazy iPhone 13 deal like they usually do.

Usually you can trade in an older device and get a 'free' newer released iPhone with 24 months of bill credit. It's the new 2 year contract but if you are staying with tmobile, they are excellent deals.

For Mother's Day, you could have traded in as low as an iPhone 8 for an iPhone 12 via 24 months of bill credits.

A lot of us think that the lowest iPhone model that will be eligible for the full trade in credit will start with the iPhone X line. iPhone X, XR, XS...
Hopefully they still accept the iPhone 8 but it's a gamble at this point

Thank you for this thorough answer! Do you also happen to know if they will match storage on the trade-in? For example I currently have an XR I bought refurbished with 256GB.

That shouldn't matter. You might get like $2 extra for the initial trade in. For example, those iPhone 8's I traded were 128gb and I think most people were trading in 64gb, I only received $2 extra as the initial trade in for the extra gb

So let's say the offer is "up to $830" for the iPhone 12. They gave me $79 as an initial bill credit so $751 would be divided over 24 months.

The XR has really good battery life. Depending on usage sometimes I only have to charge it every other day.

Trying to assess risk here. Let's say I pull the trigger and the network coverage is awful in my area and it's just not working out.
1. I can first try to unlock the phone through some of the methods suggested here.
2. If that fails, I can trade it in to Apple.
3. And worst case, I can hold onto it as an "extra" phone that only works on wifi for 11 months until I can legit unlock. Or do I need to pay for service every month?
I also need to pay for a case to cover the coral-only option that nobody has yet mentioned. laugh out loud

Also, can I choose different Walmart Family Plans in future months?

1. rsim should work, I just tested it on 14.7.1 and it works with my tmobile spare line
2. $240 at apple is not really $240 cash. The reason I say this is you can usually buy apple stuff for a lower price at other retail stores such as Best Buy, micro center etc...
For example, let's say the iPad is $330 retail at apple. Usually Best Buy, micro etc...has them for $280.
3. you need to pay for service for those 11 months. Some people say they have gotten it to unlock with the 1 year SIM card service. that's very risky though.
They sell a skin for like $5-$8 for the back of the XR. I purchased one for a family member. works fine.

I've been on walmart family mobile for 2 and a half years. It uses tmobile towers. I have no complaints. My girlfriend has regular tmobile service and I've never experienced a time that she had service and I didn't or better service than me.
Can you please check if your girlfriend's sim will work on this phone?

Could I buy this and immediately trade it in at AT&T on a new phone for the credit? I'm still rocking the 7plus because I'd hoped they would have a better deal than the trade in offers so far but they haven't and it's on the original battery and getting a little long in the tooth. Thank in advance

I don't have this phone. I have an unlocked note 20 ultra and s10+ previously. So her sim would definitely work on my phone. I was just answering questions someone had about Walmart family mobile service.

Yes that's correct. I used RSIM 15. I say used because there was a Slickdeals post of someone mentioning that they were able to soft unlock their iPhone without having to have the RSIM inside the phone. Here's the post if you're curious:

You don't need to keep rSim inside your phone. A new version of rSim allowing you to insert it once and to change ICCID permanently. I bought item# 133704561445 on eBay for $4.95, Inserted once, changed ICCID then switched to my Mint sim. Works just fine for me.

So does the lock go away when the iphone is updated? Meaning rSIM stops working?

I have a family account with a few xr's on them. What exactly is wrong with the xr's? We use Tmobile and so far have had no issues. Hoping that T-Mobile has a crazy upgrade deal for the 13 so I can trade these in

Thank you

Upgraded a few users to the 12 when they had the Mother's Day iPhone 8 trade in deal but the 5g is horrible around here.
They have far worse reception. WiWavelength did a full technical analysis. This is why Qualcomm iPhone 7/8/X was preferred.

XR/XS got closer and 11 nearly closed the gap. But I wouldn't use an XR in rural country.

Thanks. This item is RSIM 13. I'm guessing the SIM always needs to stay on the phone?

Tmobile does not work. It has TMobile network but it has nothing to do with Tmobile. Most of these phone companies are locked at least 1 year.
