Highly recommend grabbing both of the Blaster Master Zero games. Side-scrolling/top-down shooter hybrids that are well worth their price for the hours of gameplay you get from each.
Not on this list, but I also recommend picking up Mark of the Ninja Remastered (side-scrolling stealth action for $4.99) and The Messenger (a love letter to the old-school Ninja Gaiden games for $7.99).
Pixeljunk Monsters 2 is just right at $2.50. I bought it day 1 because I loved the original and this sequel was very disappointing. Art style is awesome despite it all, but they added "tricky" waves in which monsters take random/odd angles that you would never have been able to logically plan for. It's all trial and error and there's no pleasure from beating stages. Sorry for the rant lol. Obviously still sore about it.

You're absolutely right. I saw what they were doing after a few stages, realized I didn't feel like playing each one twice in a row (at least), and put the game down.

It's all about pLaYeR eNgAgEmEnT these days thanks to the mobile market, unfortunately
$5 for the class Contra is definitely hard to decline. And, if I spend $10 on Dragon's Lair I'll have spent far less on that horribly difficult game than I did at Showbox Pizza in the 80s.
