I just send an email to Olight, as they are incorrectly charging Sales Tax on shipping to the State of California. I referred them to the state publication here:
https://www.cdtfa.ca.gov/taxes-an...es-faq.htm

Where it states quite clearly that shipping is non-taxable in the state, based on the conditions of the sale (separately charged shipping, in the state example matches what Olight is doing, separately, so there is no tax on the shipping but they're charging it anyway). I expect a reply from them as well as a refund for the overcharge. Oddly, last November when they had a similar promo going on, they didn't charge tax on the shipping.

This is a quote from the state tax page referenced above:
"Delivery chargesYou have the property delivered directly to your customer using a common carrier, the U.S. Mail, or an independent contractor
Tax does not apply to the delivery charges under these conditions if the charges are clearly stated as a separate entry on the invoice or other bill of sale. If the delivery charges are not stated separately, they are taxable.
Example

You sell a refrigerator and have it delivered by an independent contract carrier. On the invoice, you show a $750 charge for the refrigerator plus a separately stated $50 charge for delivery (the amount charged you by the carrier). Since the delivery charge is stated separately, tax applies only to the charge of the refrigerator ($750). If the invoice had shown a single charge of $800, tax would apply to the entire amount."
I was able to add both the Olight i1R 2 EOS 150 Lumen + Olight i3E EOS 90 Lumen Keychain Flashlights.

Used the code OSUMMER10 and got $7.96 off.

Total came out to 5$ + tax
As a seller in the state of California I charge tax on shipping because when shipping is calculated it may not be accurate. If for example I charged $3.85 for shipping and it only ended up costing me $3.35, then I have to pay tax on the 50 cents and I have no way of accounting at this level to reconcile individual shipping costs against an order, so this would have to be done manually.

The $5.00 Olight is charging is S&H. In the state of California you don't have to charge tax on *actual* shipping costs. No chance actual shipping costs come to an even $5.00. Olight is making $1-2 on shipping and therefore tax would be due on that $1-2, so they'd rather just charge tax on all of it.

The state cares more if a vendor under taxes than over taxes, this will likely go nowhere, kind of nitpicky over $0.68 or whatever

Call it nitpicky if you want. I'm not giving this state one more penny than I have to. We're already taxed out the wazoo. No problem if you're fine with getting overcharged. I'm not.

I'm with You. It's not about how much, it's about the fact. Next time they will charge him extra $10. Fight for what's Yours 😉

Thanks, some people can't see the problem with being overcharged. They can throw some of their money my way, if they have cash to toss out. laugh out loud
