Just updated with NAPA auto parts deals. Still waiting for O'Reilly to update their ad since the current deals apparently expired yesterday (6/3)

Why does no one consult their owner's manual? All automobile manufacturers state when the oil should be changed specific to your vehicle's engine.

Think about where "every 3000 miles" comes from. Oil companies. Don't you think the engineers that designed the actual engine have a better idea of when the oil should be changed through countless hours/years of research and testing? There are standards that motor oil manufacturers must meet and that your automobile's engine is designed for.

Besides the manual, many new cars have the ability to tell you when the oil needs to be changed. Manufacturers trust the ability of these systems enough to warranty the vehicle.

Just something to think about. You are of course free to form your own opinion.Cool
yes and no. my 2002 saab suggested oil changes with semi-synthetic every 10K. if you did that, you had issues with slufge because the turbo and exhaust were by the pan, which cooks the oil prematurely. I change every 5 k with synthetic (albeit whatever is on sale, not mobil 1) and have not had sludge issues. I agree with the SD'er that said find an online forum for you particular car. there are people and mechanics that have been there/done that for your car.

with all this talk about the time to change your oil...I would like to also state that the 3000 miles was the measure from back in the 60's or 70's. As the oil has been improving over the years with better additives is can now be used for a longer period of time/ mileage. Also with more precise tolerances and better design of the engine less blow-by is allowed to enter the the crankcase thereby increasing the oil life (as gasoline breaks down the oil ). So all in all the choice of changing the oil at 3000 miles is over kill in most cars/trucks. however there are exceptions.....especially if the vehicle is used in very dust/dirty conditions. Even the car manufactures are stateing that it can be changed at 7000 + miles. I wouldn't necessarily go that far, 5-6000 would be a good milage to change (again this is just preference).

Thumbs up on this post. OP repd

at Advance Auto, you can get ANY mobil1 oil, which means if you get the extended performance mobil1 oil, its still $27, compared to $30 at Autozone. i dont care about the filter, i only use manufacturer oil filters. ends 6/31/08.

I stopped in CarQuest today, and the Valvoline SynPower was $6.76 a quart, no rebates. Was anyone able to to get 6 quarts for $9 after MIR?

Pep Boys is continuing the 3 Castrol / Purolator deals this week, 6/15–6/21.

The rebates are good for purchases from June 1 through July 5 (postmark by July 19), so we might keep seeing these deals a few more weeks.

PB June rebate form is available here [young-america.com] (PDF file), listed on this page: http://www.web-rebates.com/pepboys/

Beware: Pep Boys' rebate processor has a frequent habit of sending a check for less than the total rebate amount requested, or denying the submission entirely (even recently, in 2008 [planetfeedback.com]). Make copies or scans of everything, and follow up as soon as they do something wrong. File a complaint with your state's Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission [ftc.gov] (find the "Consumer Complaint" link near top of home page).

dttruax — Good thread. But rather than quoting the entire OP, it would be better to simply update your post #1 and then list only the changes in your later posts. That will make it much easier for people to spot what's changed, and allow people to see more posts per page (and prevent the thread from growing into more pages quite as fast).

In fact, if you move the list from post #1 into the Wiki, other people will be able to help keep it up-to-date.

Same comment to NiTE — there was no need for you to quote the entire OP. Eventually, all of the deals will be expired, and seeing the stale version may confuse some people.

This is where I found the deal:

http://carquest.v1.myvirtualpaper...pi/?page=1

It says it's a mail in rebate that expires June 30. There was a link on their web page to the rebate forms before, but I can't find them now. I imagine they should still have them in-store.

Was in the store today and had no luck getting the rebate forms. Think they may have pulled the rebate

If there's an O'Reilly Auto Parts near you, you can still get the Valvoline MIR deals through 7/31.
